Had a hull survey this afternoon and to be honest I cried on the way home. The boat is not seaworthy and will cost several £k to make her so.

The hull was originally fitted out by her first owner. It appears that in areas the first owner did not put in enough strengthening. As a consequence most of the port side has delaminated and some of the starboard side too and it is this that has allowed the keel to move and now leak. The port side is very wet too so it has been going on for ages. The mast support is only on the port side so the deck is dipping on one side too.

I am awaiting the full report but verbally I have been suggested 2 options:
a) Sell the boat as a 'Project' listing the defects possible value about £5k (well there are new sails, rigging and wonderful upholstry!)
b) DIY fix. Take best part of a year.

I am not sure I have either the DIY skills or the heart to rip out the insides of Flipper and rebuild her so trying to sell he may be the only option.

Whichever way I feel totally let down by the surveyor I employed when I was looking to buy Flipper. Had he made me aware of the consequences of the self build I would have moved on and found another boat to nurture and love for 6 years. You would think that a so called expert should have given me the full story - after all that is why I employed him.

The only reference to self build and lack of strengthening in the survey says.... ' these by themselves would not necessary affect the overall strength of the craft' - if only. My only hope now is that I can get the insurers to pay up under 'latent defect in the Vessel' or 'negligence' of the initial surveyor.

BTW if you want a surveyor I would suggest without prejudice or making any comment on his ability that you do not employ Reg B Crawley an individual I have no desire to meet.

Now back to the brandy bottle.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck.

What type of vessel is the "FLIPPER", you may have said before but I am afraid I cannot recall?

One advantage of doing the repairs yourself is that you will know exactly what has been done to the vessel and you can ensure that you make it stronger than it currently is.

In one sense since you have the new sails etc, this gives you a chance to really change the whole vessel. When finished call her "PHOENIX".

Good Luck with whatever option you select.

That's terrible news. Its not as if you found it at the end of the season and had the winter to sort it out for next year. The loss of a season is as serious as the damage.

Sounds to me like there may be comeback on the original survey?

Only have been told that as he is not insured there is little point in persuing! Just hope the insurers accept the 'negligence' part of the policy!

Good isn't it - get a survey from a so called reputable surveyor, get rubbish advice and have no comeback. Guess that what is called 'Buyer Beware'. Be funny if it wasn't costing me £ks.

Well, I have read this 4 times now and can only say that I last felt like this when CliveG posted his bad news about Sirenia.
How totally gutting.

Sorry Peter, if we can help in any way, I am sure the good people round here will rally to the call.

My PM offer still stands, of course.

Depending on what GJW say, it may be worth discussing with RYA legal. It may still be the surveyor's risk - whether he is insured or not. If he chose not to be insured, then he presumably then carries personal risk (or if say a Ltd company then the company may be liable). You should not expect to pay for professional services who then get it very wrong, without some sort of comeback.

Peter, I'm afraid words fail me, only thing I can come up with is, oh bollocks
Not sure if there is anything I can do to help, but if there is anything then I will do my utmost to do it. Not the sort of news I was hoping to read at all. Sorry to hear it

What a dreadful shock, Peter, I'm really really sorry - apart from the worry and the financial loss, a boat becomes part of the family.
A lesson here for all of us, perhaps, regarding purchase surveys.
I do hope that things turn out less black for you than they seem now.
Good luck and best regards.

Peter

My heart goes out to you, if you do decide to work on her, as Mudplugger suggested we do know a farmer who may be able to accommodate Flipper.

im really sorry to hear your news,it took me a couple of months to pluck up the will to start fixing mine, ive got the same insurers as yourself, the bit about the insurance that peed me off is that im having to pay for the repairs/new parts up front.

I am currently awaiting a boom from the USA,they are shipping it by boat /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

with a bit of luck ill be sailing in 4-6 weeks.

Peter - Hoped when I called across to you on Saturday that it was just a case of tightening keel bolts and a bit of goo. Desperately sorry to hear the news and join you in your anger towards the original surveyor. Just because he's not insured doesn't mean you shouldn't pursue a case.

I have a pass for the Ostend trip so it'll be a boys' sail - berth if you want one.
