Flexible drive coupling

Thinking of fitting one to my Hunter Ranger / 1GM10 to reduce vibration and displace the propshaft aft (better water flow through cutlass with rope cutter fitted)

Anyone got first hand experience / opinions please?
 
Fitting a flexible coupling is a good idea. The one (R&D Marine) proposed by TheBoatman is the one that me and most people I know use and are satisfied.

On the other hand displacing the propeller aft I'm not sure it's a good idea. As far as I know the distance of the propeller from the aft-most bearing should be no more than the shaft's diametre or excessive vibration is likely to show up. When I fitted the coupling I got a new, shorter shaft as the cost was not much higher than that of shortening the old one.

Also note that no coupling is a substitute to good alignment. It is still very important.
 
I have a Hunter 26 and am in the process of replacing the Yanmar 1GM10 with a Nanni 14 for a little more power. The Yanmar did not have a flexable coupling but for the new setup I am going to fit a R&D one. (about £50) It will move the prop back 1 inch which will then give the extra length to fit a rope cutter. I dont think Hunters fitted any flexable couplings as standard.

If the engine/drive is rubber mounted you can get total fore and aft movement of up to 18mm, we work to a safe gap of 12mm at rest. This is after the spool of the cutter is atached to the prop.

This can then reduce safely to 3mm as the shaft moves 9mm forewards when running full ahead, or when foreward gear is engaged. 3mm is more than adequate for water flow, cooling and lubrication needs.
