As Welsh Water (motto: It falls from the sky excessively, but we still like to charge lots) has now decreed that all circular section hoses are illegal in the Principality's marinas, and everyone must use a flat one, where does one purchase such a flat hose? I've tried garden centres, DIY warehouses, supermarkets, car boot sales and even a rummage in my Dad's shed (getting desperate now). I can't find one anywhere. Any clues from other such water deficient Welsh sailors?

(Alternative - anyone got a steam roller I could borrow, I've got plenty of non-flat hose that could just be flattened?)

Try a chandler, I bort one quite a few years ago on a reel, have only used it once cos it was a pain having to unwind the whole thing! I'd also check with camping and caravaning outlets.

BTW why have they outlawed traditional hose? Maybe someone should introduce square hose, maybe that would keep em happy.

Try B&Q, they have lay-flat hose on windup reels Same bore as normail hose when in use so you can have the same amount of water just as fast as when using normal hose.

Seems a daft regulation to me - did something het lost in the traslation? (haha).

I bought a reel from Homebase a while ago; it's nylon based. There are two types one yellow certified good for drinking, and green which isn't. I bought green (being mean) and apart from the manufacturing disenfectant smellin for while (we flushed it out for a time), I can't see the difference other than price.

The principal advantage IMO is that it's very compact and comes on a reel, the disadvantage is that you have to unreel the lot each time.

They have banned em because its in the regs. The marina have stuck a copy of the order on the notice board. Apparently it is something to do with syphoning, think that when the ressies get emptiesh they might start to syphon Pwllheli marina back up the hosepipes into the hills which isn't such a bad idea aprt from it tastes crap and we don't need any less water with the marina silting up.

Oh, and they have nowt else to do.

I have a flat hose that I bought through QVC. It is different to most flat hoses which need to be taken completely off the reel before use. This one will run perfectly well when still on the reel, and even if a car is parked on the hose!

Dont see what difference a flat hose will make regarding anti-syphoning, I would have thought it easier to install a gadget in their line to stop this happening.

arent we supposed to fit a water stop, to a hose pipe, which stops cryptites etc, getting back up the hose into the mains water supply.before we use a hose pipe anyway, so i dont see a difference if it is flat or round hose.

(not the correct spelling for the little parasites) as the actual correct name escapes me at the mo....

The regs are The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, and they require water supplies to be fitted with non-return valves to prevent backflow, and subsequent contamination of the water supply (along with a lot of other stuff, such as insect traps on overflow pipes). I would have thought that the marina would have been able to install the necessary gear on their rising main which feeds the pontoons.

Flat hoses are specified because water is less likely to siphon back up them - they collapse and restrict the flow.

I think the bugs are called cryptosporidia

How sad am I?

I bought mine from B&Q. But I also noticed Firmhelm in Pwllheli had one for a very similar price, shocking really when you consider their usual pricing strategy!

If you are struggling I would be happy to pick you one up, mine was about £32.00 as I remember, but included plastic rack and spinflo ends (is that the right tradename?).

The biggest problem with flat hose is that you have to completely unwind to use, is a bugger to empty to re-stow in that you really need it out flat in a straight line to stop kinks appearing when you try to force the water out, and you cannot use a jetwash with it.

hope this helps

maybe all you marina berth holders need to get the marina owners to sort something out for you so you dont need to use flat hoses, you pay enough for the berth anyway, so get the marina owners to fit the non return valves, and not have another eu beaucratic (idiotic) solution, thrust on every boat owner in the marina, (red diesel prices, light dues, new FLAT hoses, what next, a water displacement tax...

Most flat hoses are not made of food grade material, so are not certified for drinking water

Another problem is that there was a price war over flat hoses in the US and quality suffered and some on the market develop leaks very quickly.

We now have a UK manufactured drinking water safe flat hose for £19.99 at storeshop.com flat hose

It is the same material as flat hoses described as "marine hose", but without adding on a premium for the "marine" description
