Yesterday - in the middle of cleaning some teak it started to rain. No problem - I'll go and fix the shower drain pump on the forward heads. All going well until I realise I need to empty the locker in the forepeak that is full of engine spares and bits and pieces left by the previous owner. I had gone through it all in a pretty cursory way when we bought the boat and noted the spare alternator belts, spare base of a Jabso loo, spare diode splitter etc etc, and left if pretty well alone.

To my embarrassment I found a flare pack and two smoke flares. The oldest one had an expiry date 12-87. Only 20 years out of date…

My trip home was via our Bomb Disposal people who seem to rub their hands when they see me coming nowadays.

Anyone admit to having flares older then these? And not the ones we wore in the 70’s!

I had some old ones off Dad's boat that were from the 60's, although that was 10 years ago now. We let them off at a bonfire event in the Australian bush, under the supervision of the local fire brigade. Apart from the fact the strikers fell to pieces, they lit happily enough with the FBs diesel igniter. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I got a puncture in the car a few weeks back, took it to the local tyre shop, the fronts were 1990 and the rears 1987! Bought a new set, handles better.

A man after my own heart - mine's much more recent - 91 with 168K miles - friends with T - 04 cars have had infinitely more problems than I have had in total over the past 11 years.

Found some red paras and handhelds in the East German liferaft I inherited with my boat. Let them all off in the garden at bonfire night. Hand helds didn't work (untill we chucked them in the bonfire!) but the paras did, sort of, and so did the liferaft, stayed up for a month too!

Last service date was '74

I take it no one has seen the latest Yachting Monthly (I think) yet then? Photos of what's left of some poor chaps fingers after he tried an out-of-date para.

I won't be going near out of date flares unless my life is in danger and I've already used the in-date ones.

Flares and liferafts last inspection dates on the some of the ferries in the Med are as old or older than those! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
In fact some look like the originals which came with the ferries decades ago!
I now make of point of trying not to look too closely so as to try and enjoy the trip more, but it's like a great magnet draws me to the inspection and expiry dates!
