OK so.. just bought a boat out in Spain, digging around under the seats we've unearthed a fairly serious looking flare gun & 4 flares to fit. Do I need a licence to carry it? Should I dispose of it? Do I keep it? Is it even legal in Spain? So many questions!

In the UK you will definitely need a Firearms Certificate. The certificate costs nothing and is not too difficult to obtain, just slightly more onerous than a passport. If the gun is in Spain and you return to UK you could have difficulties importing it. Know nothing of the law in Spain.

No license required for flare gun while it's on board in the UK but needed if taken ashore.

Suggest you do not handle it with finger on the trigger per pic posted. Rule #1 -Consider every "firearm" is loaded. Finger on trigger ONLY after it is aimed in a safe direction & you are ready to fire it.
No offense intended-assume you are unfamiliar with "firearms".

From the pic, this appears to be a "commercial grade"(big ship) 25mm flare launcher & the flares are superior to the common plastic "pistol" 12ga. launchers.
I have a plastic OLIN 12ga-very common over here- & it works fine, but the 25mm flares go higher? & burn longer?
It is not a "gun"! It is a high quality distress flare launcher & very legal. Used to be called a "Very? Pistol.
If you fired it at someone @ close range, they will have a nasty bruise,& you will both be preoccupied with a white phosphorous conflagration.
Please Google Flare Launchers.
Cheers/Len

In the UK you need a license, also if you need to take it abroad you need a European license.

Ship and hovercraft equipment
6.51 No certificate is necessary to authorise the possession of firearms and ammunition subject
to section 1 of the 1968 Act on board ship as part of the ship’s equipment (section 13(1)(a)
of the 1968 Act). A certificate is, however, required to acquire.

I had a Webley very pistol for 40 years . I had a firearms cert plus ( in later years) a european licence
I had to store in special cabinet at home but not on board. However, I never left the pistol on board when I was not using the boat so I needed the licence then
The risk of some scrote nicking it ( & missusing it)were too great as far as I was concerned

The French examined the licence ( I always declared possession) but never looked at the pistol. Same in Belgium. The Dutch were not in the least interested on the couple of times they boarded
I only turned it in when Webly flares ( Scheumely)were no longer available in UK
I found the white flares great for recognition. Fortunately never used any reds
The shells last longer than flares ( because they are dated) & were much cheaper
Plastisimo ( now someone else) did make the guns buttheir flares were not suitable for my gun.
Getting one imported was a no no as it was a job to find someone in UK who could import them.

If it was not so much hassle buying I would have another

I now carry a set of pen flares in my LJ pouch but they are red & although white are advertised, getting them is proving difficult
