Courtesy flags supposed to be the smaller version of the civil ensign of a country. Yet, land flags are marketed as "courtesy flag" for the Channel Islands and IoM, why? They do have their defaced red ensigns, in the age of easy textile printing I doubt it would be difficult to make proper, "small ensigns"? What are the visitors expected to wear?

Bit similar with the Spain, where flags with and without crown are circulating.

I've never seen the Manx civil ensign used as a courtesy flag. I suppose it depends on what Manx Law says; it may be as wrong to use their civil ensign as it would be to use a UK blue ensign.

I've seen a very small Scottish merchant flag used as a courtesy flag in Scotland, but most people who fly anything seem to use a saltire. Nobody here cares at all if visitors don't fly one, but it's generally appreciated when they do.

I think that I have an Alderney and Guernsey land flags used as courtesy flags and I purchased them from the chandlers on each island. They are more distinctive than using a red duster with a small gold cross. Overall the locals have never appeared to bothered if you are spending money and greet them politely !

I emailed the Manx Harbour Board to ask if there is an official view there. It seems that there is not, but the chap who replied said that in his view Manx registered ships should use the ensign and visitors should use the legs. However, either is warmly welcome as a courtesy flag.
