Normally I post on the stinkies forum but thought you lot here would know the proper answer to this one since you're all so knowledgeable about etiquette etc.

In the light of the Queen Mum's sad demise, I notice that all public buildings are flying flags at half mast and it occurs to me whether we should be flying our flags at half mast too, or is there any proper way we should mark this event? And if so up till when? The funeral or ....?

I flew my ensign at halfmast last weekend, other boats were doing the same.Dont know how long for though. I have a flagpole at home, half masted, I will have to find out when to return to full mast. I understand that to halfmast you should run the ensign to the top first and then down.

The time for flags on public buildings to returnm to fuul mast is midnight on Tuesday, after the funeral. Guess for vessels it would be at sunset that evening.

Re: What is Half Mast

I understand that the correct position for half mast is neither halfway up or halfway down the staff/pole.

I have always believed that the top edge of the flag should be at the same distance from the top of the mast as the measured breadth of the flag.

Am I right, wrong or what?
