Dont know how well you lot are on your flag etiquette. Im going to take the boat to Ireland next year, so what sort of courtesy flag will i require and where should it be flown/worn, bearing in mind ive only got the one flagstaff!!

From what ive seen when over "there", they havent got a clue what they are doing any way, they still use the old black lateral marks, now who was it that said they were slow. (before anyone take offence, Im married to one so i have first hand experience of how "tick" they are)

Re: S Ireland

Whereabouts you going? I know the Cork-Mizen bit very well. Turn vhf vol down if kids on board, you get lots of silence then ranting on Ch16 along the lines of "der's no f'kin fish round here Facthna the f'kin b'stards have f'kin gon home, f'kin" etc etc only quite a lot coarser than that. All on Ch16 and no Solent CG to slap their wrists. But fab location

I have a choice of two flags. The old one and the new one.
Must admit I had similar problems last time in Ireland.
I was going from S Ireland to N Ireland.
Now do I wear British flag! Irish Flag. Well I didn't have one of those. So used none. So as not to offend anyone.

Wonder about that Haydn. S.Ireland are pretty nationalistic. I have seen both French & Belgian authorties 'pull' yachts about not flying a courtesy flag certainly some countries can be quite funny about it. Quite rightly too IMHO but I am an old stickler for flag etiquette. I feel it's all part of our history and as a nautical country it is up to us to lead by example. Always remember being in Ostend and there were seven rag n stickies from the Royal Southern Yacht Club there, bang on time all their Ensigns were lowered together, a Belgian said to me in a broad Yorkshire accent... "by 'eck they got style 'aven't they"

If the southern Irish are so nationalistic, how come the Irish Government are paying thier nationals to ove back to Ireland, Just wish my wife would take the hint.

Dear Byron,

I do seem to be responding to you more than the rest put together.

I'm very glad to see my club is upholding flag etiquette when abroad. At a recent "do" there was a low rumble from one boat inparticular when some had not lowered their ensigns on time, so I suspect I know the instigator.

I thought it was only the Royal Navy that raised the ensign between sunrise and sunset and vessels that wore the red ensign have them raised when the master etc were aboard, or has my great sage of Dayskipper/Yachtmaster got it wrong.

I thought only Scuttlebutters got worked up over this stuff.

I was once grumbled at because my Irish courtesy flag had dropped a few inches down from the cross trees (raggy thing - don't worry about it).

You could try zig-zagging up and down Carlingford Lough with border down the middle. With enough persistance you could upset everybody.

PS if you see a RN minesweeper tied up near the entrance don't salute him. I did and the ***** did'nt respond.

Have a good trip

Didn't realise you are R.Srn.Y.C., damn fine club, spent many a happy hour in there during the 70s. Used to do splendid grub too.
I got blotto once or twice or thrice with your Commodore and his wife during the little ships rally to Dunkirk last year. If you see them remember me to them, ask him if they remember my mouse being captured in La Pilotine and the note I got... "buy the whole bar a drink or the Mouse gets it" cost me about 1700 Francs to get my mouse back. The kidnapping was organised by an ex-commodore of the RTYC and (I suspect) abetted by them.

Re: S Ireland

Were planning to start in limerick and follow the Shannon to Athlone, so the wife can go home. Its not a bad trip with slow bits on the river and bits across the Loughs where you can open the throttles and blow away the cobwebs. As far as all the fishermen f,kin all over the place, she taught them to use the vhf!!!

Personally I don't get worked up about it, I go my own way and adhere to etiquette because I choose too. If others want to ignore it then that is their perogative. I shouldn't really but I do automatically assume that they don't know much about boating (which is naughty I know). Goes back to my Cadet days when I was told that if their etiquette is lacking then chances are their seamanship is too.
