That is the tradition - since Pepys decreed it for the Navy to save costs. I wrap mine round the staff & tuck the end under to furl it overnight. 8am to 8pm is sometimes acceptable too.

I pull the staff out usually, either before I set off or when I get back. Just wondered if anyone actually bovvered while mid passage.

Some leave ensigns & burgees flying 24/7/365 to keep the seagulls away.
It doesn't seem to work tho & my Ensign (a defaced blue) costs 90 squid to replace, so I ain't doing that! Oh, & yes I could get it cheaper, but that would deprive the club of much needed funds. A listed C13th clubhouse is not cheap to maintain.

at least in the mobo world the commonest practice is to fly the ensign when on board, and take it down when you are not. Bit like Buckingham palace.
