The exhaust water trap on our BMW D35 engine has split its seams, discharging exhaust gas in the lazarette and water (lots) in the bilges. Crossing from Weymouth to Cherbourg yesterday we put up with the fumes and the bilge pump took care of the water but we need to get it fixed or replaced.

Can anyone suggest someone in Cherbourg who might be able to do a bit of stainless welding? Or a source for a replacement? It has 50mm connections for the exhaust hose.

can a temp fix be done with epoxy metal

I don't think so - the constant percussion of the exhaust pressure was enough to split the welded seams of the stainless box. Admittedly the box had been custom made (by a coded welder!0 ) but the internal baffles dropped off first, which meant that there was nothing to stop the sides from flexing with each exhaust stroke. I suspect it needs welding.... s/s fabricator, Cherbourg?
 
A few years ago I had a new engine fitted to my boat by Basourdy Marine, who are (or were then) located behind the capitainerie in the Port Chantereyne in Cherbourg. I thought they did a very good job, even fitting a new propeller without taking the boat out of the water. Well worth asking.
 
The big boatyard in the western corner has a workshop. suspect the chandlery will also be able to get Vetus bits if you need to buy a new one.

Theres a holiday for two days here so bit the bullet and bought a new Vetus - ouch! That much for a plastic moulding? (E150). As usual, thanks all.
 
Ask at the Capitainerie and the other retail outlets around the marina. Also ask at some of the backstreet garages.
There is also an industrial park on the corner of D901, Rue des Pommiers and Voie Nord-Sud, Tourlaville (South East outskirts of Cherbourg). Their is a bus that will take you there.
