Fixing Yeoman Plotter under chart table

I am planning to install one of these to the back of my chart table lid. I've bought a Yeoman Sport, taken it apart and am planning to stick the PCB mat to the table lid. Annoyingly the table lid is about 1cm shorter than the mat but I think I can cut the PCB in the strip on the side with the computer 'box', where there appear to be no wires. Does anyone know if that would be okay?..

Secondly, my table lid has a hinge which of course is metal. The manual says there should be no metal objects within 50mm of the mat.. Will this affect the functionality of the mat? It will be beside the mat rather than directly above or below it.

Appreciate any advice.

I have a Pro which sits on top of the nav table and must overlap the hinge (though I have never actually checked that). I've never noticed any ill effect.
