Fixed price autopilot repairs offered on ebay

After an exchange of emails, I sent them a course computer having paid their charge. They sent it back with the suggestion that I buy a new one from them and they would give me a discount. I wouldn’t touch them with a barge Pole!

Did you get your computer fixed elsewhere thus confirming your suspicions?

I sent them an old Simrad which I wasn't really surprised they gave the thumbs down to.
I also sent a a much more recent ST2000 on which they commented about water ingress; no surprise but advice was to scrap that as well. I've got it back and will take the lid off to see if it's summat straightforward.
I'd guess that a new bit or two plus labour charges soon pushes things beyond economic repair. Meantime they're collecting their fixed price

About 2years ago I had a big repair done on a Simrad WP10 . Think it was a rebuild of the motor. Still working well after repair. Information, liaison, discussion about the repair was excellent. I would certainly use them again.

No, but I suspected it needed a few MOSFETS replacing, and they told me nothing about what they found that made it not repairable. My experience suggested that it was a scam to collect money, and only carry out repairs that were worth it for the money collected, (which is fair enough, but that isnt what they sold to me.

I sent them a Rayamrine E80 with a blown diode feeding the card reader. They wanted to fir a new moterhboard - £575!

Raymarine fixed it for £30.

Rip-off merchants.

Pm me for a link to a whizzkid if you can't find a fixer. He has saved me a couple of thousand pounds.

Thanks. After dithering about whether to have mine repaired or buy a new one, the smell of soot from the innards plus a broken case fixing lug, and a low price offer from the German chandlery AWN, convinced me to buy a new one. The old one has given good service since 2000 so I can't complain.

Many thanks to you and the others for taking the trouble to give me advice.

Repaired a Raymarine ST60 speed-depth display for me: very efficient service. Let me keep 4 matched instruments instead of having one a different model and shape.
