To follow up with my previous post of GPS failure, it is now working correctly. thanks to all who responded.

The unit was eventually sent to Comar, who deal with Magellan products. They advised that there was nothing that could be done, and they did not know what the exact fault was. I was then informed that the units are not repairable, but they would sell me a re-con unit for £65. I found it very strange that re-con units can be offered if they are un-repairable.

I had the unit returned to me, because in the time it was away, I had an e-mail from Magellan advising me of a possible fix ( Comar had by all accounts talked with Magellan). The fix was to erase the memory completely, this was eventually done by leaving the batteries out for two days rather than the 30 minutes as advised in the user manual. After this was done, the time etc was re-entered and the unit was working again within 15 mins.

What annoyed me about this whole episode was, if Comar are agents for Magellan, why did they not know about this possible fix and could only offer a replacement.

I bet you had to pay postage aswell! The "agents" should have known this "fix", I would have a word with magellan about this and see about a refund of postage, aswell as letting them know they should be telling their agants of "fixes" of course it couldn't be that Comar, were trying to rip you off and knew the fix and just wanted to sell you another unit, as you said, if they are un-repairable, how do they recondition them? or am I being an old cynical bugger again?
