I have just ordered a set of Plastimo 406 roller reefing for Katie L

does anyone have any advice to give me before I make a start on fitting it

any snags I should look out for?

what sort of rope for the roller is best?

on the slug the orginal rope was really thin and was tough on my hands

I replaced it with slightly thicker rope and it kept on throwing a coil which meant a trip to the foredeck

needless to say I will make a film about my experiences of fitting it.

I have looked at the instructions which are on a pdf

http://www.plastimo.com/pdf/S-Series(english).pdf

I also found this

http://www.neil.fuller.dsl.pipex.com/v650/articles/p406fit.pdf

but contact with a forumite who has done the job would be great

Read instructions carefully and follow them.

They will, I think, make a lot more sense to you as you go along than they do just reading them on their own.

They suggest 5mm furling line. Provided you can get the necessary length on the drum I go up to 6mm or even 7mm. Don't use 3 strand!

If it comes with special bent shackle for attaching the halyard be sure to use it but I dont think the 406 does, only the larger models

Be sure to fit the halyard diverter. Use the type that fits on the front of the mast rather than the wheel type that fits on top of the spar if you can.

Before you get set to do the job be sure that the spar as supplied is long enough. You don't want to get all set to do the job only to discover you need an extra section ... I expect for the Gunter rig it will be OK though.

Repace the furling line with a braid on braid with the core removed for most of its length.
Coils up small but is easy to handle.

I tried to advise against a 406 but you went for it anyway...
