Iam assisting a friend of mine to fit a secondhand plastimo roller reefing kit to his Prelude 19 4mm forestay.

We need to shorten the luffspar a bit, also does anyone knowe how much spare forestay needs to be sticking out the end for a rigger to squeeze a new talurite eye on??

We would prefer to do that than fit a "norseman eye"or similar.

Any advise gratefully received.

If you go to the Plastiimo website they have a 28 page pdf file on fitting the various sizes of Roller Reefing. Also the UK supplier, whose name escapes me right now, but advertises in PBO, is extremely knowledgeable & helpful. I have an elderly 810s & he talked me through removal & replacement for when I renew the existing forestay. I also want to replace the existing thimble eye with a terminal & he gave me lots of help.
Hope it helps you.

what construction is your forestay? if it's the usual 1x19 you mustn't use a talurit as it bends the wire too sharply. it's ok for 6x7 or 7x7 but those probably wouldn't work with the furler.

if you are using a talurit, allow the circumference of the thimble plus 2x the length of the talurit (around 15mm). I had a norseman type fitting on my forestay and though the stay failed twice in other places the fitting remained secure.

Thanks to both of you for the advice.

Probably easier to use a Norseman Fitting rather than transport the whole thing round to the boatyard that does the talurite splices near us.
