I cut a transducer sized hole in a piece of hardwood and epoxied it in my hull whilst ashore in the boatyard.
I thought filling it with molten wax would be a good idea (though I've never heard it done before) and sank my transom mount transducer into it whilst still liquid.
I've mounted it next to where a previous transducer went, but just an inch or two nearer the centre of the boat.
The unit fires up (Garmin 300C) but reads no depth (I'm afloat now).
I'm surprized it does not find the depth; is it just because I'm not using oil.
The previous transducer was a 'proper' in hull job and glued/epoxied directly to the hull.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Recommended fluids are veg. oil (although I personally don't get the 'veg.' idea) or antifreeze coolant. Any acid free oil would do IMO.

My instructions (P79 transducer) say not to use epoxy as it's too brittle, but the idea of the transducer is to transmit the frequencies into the water to find the sea bed (and back). Might be that the wax simply absorbs it?

Veg oil is recommended so that it doesn't go rancid. You also don't want an oil that separates out at low temperatures such as olive oil. Castor oil is usually recommended.

Bought the cheapest Garmin i could find which came with a transom mount transducer.
I thought i would see if it would work through Glass/Ply hull so positioned it in a wadge of vaseline as a temporary measure.
My intention was to use silicon for a permanent fix if the vaseline worked.
It worked a treat and is so firmly held in place by the vaseline that i have glued in a wee open top box to surround the transducer and protect it from accidental knocks - but left it in the vaseline. As compared to silicon, it will be a lot easier to replace and clean up the mounting position if/ when that becomes necessary.
Cheers
