Finally got an Eber at an acceptable price - I guess they go cheaper in the Summer when folk forget it gets cold in 6 months!

Now, the problem of fitting. The spaces under the saloon berth seem to have holes designed for the heating ducting to run through, but I can't see how to get passed the chart table and heads.

Has anyone fitted a heating unit to a Bavaria 34?

Don't know about bavs, but when I fitted my heater I ran the ducting thru the heads, and then punched a few (4) half centimetre holes in it, which warms up the head quite nicely, without affecting airflow from the main vent too much.

I have a little webasto that takes the chill off the air while the Dickinson's is firing up.

The one thing you have to be careful with is crushing the duct work, especially if running inside a locker

Jeremy - I have a Bavaria 36, which is I believe, a similar layout to the 34 - the Eberspacher was factory fitted. The actual heater unit is mounted on the back of the aft cabin rear bulkhead, port side (in the transom lazarette of course). The main heat conducting trunk then come forward under the aft cabin bed (owners example, therefore only one cabin on port side. Under here, it has a smaller duct feeding off it across into the heads (travelling behind the engine/gearbox) whilst the main duct continues forward on the port side, under the aft cabin wardrobes, under the galley and into the port side bunk, where there is an outlet into the main cabin. A smaller duct continues from a Y piece from this, through the forward bulkhead, and exits with a vent under the port side wardrobe to heat the forward cabin . Therefore, it does not have to go through the nav- station area. You can see therefore that the whole lot travels up the port side only. We did opt for a 4th outlet in the heads to help dry wet gear etc. Our unit is the Airtronic D4, and does cope with four outlets. However, in very cold weather, we tend to shut off the vent in the aft cabin (which is only used as a storage area 99% of the time to increase the flow in the main cabin.

Hope that may help you

Thanks Nicho, thats a perfect description. I guess the only real loss of storage is the pan locker under the cooker.

I presume yours was fitted by Opal, and not by Bav. I hope so, as it proves it can be retrofitted.

I've managed to get a 1999 D1LC for £250. I know its not enough for the coldest of winter's day, ,but should be enough to take the chill off in early spring and late autumn. As it is only 2kw, I was going to put one outlet in the saloon, and another in the forecabin.

Hi Jeremy - got one installed on our Bav34 (installed by Kreuger's who do the work for Opal's). Pipe goes through the wet hanging locker in the heads low down against the hull [this is a good point to have a slider fitted in the pipe so you can dry your oillies/get the heads warm if you need to]. Then its behind the vanity unit and actually passes behind the switch panel in the electrics space. You have to loop the pipe up a bit to get it over the various intrusions behind the panelling but then it descends past the storage nook in the kneewell of the chart table to emerge behind the stbd bunk.

Yes, in fact it was done by Opal at their point of entry. Actually, we can still get the pots and pans in the locker, so it obviously doesn't take up too much space. I would imagine you will find the D1L fine in most conditions, but try to keep the trunking runs a short as possible to avoid heat loss. I believe these can be insulated to keep any loss to a minimum - good luck with the fitting.

I have just fitted a heating system on my Bav 34. You describe the ducting run very well except the ducting actually routes not up and over the wiring consol interior (as I did first time round and disturbed a lot of wiring to my annoyance) but through the box channel under the chart table seat locker where it enters directly into the battery locker ( through the existing 60mm clearance holes provided.)
Hope this prevents any dislodged wiring and bad language!!!!!!!!!!!

fitted a d1lc in my beneteau 351, put it in the sugar scoop compartment and then led the pipe thru the port aft cabin, which keeps that cosy, into the saloon with just one outlet, that is sufficient to keep the whole boat cosy in normal winter and if you leave running all night allowed me to sleep on board on the hard in the darkest coldest nights whilst fettling (minus god knows but plenty of frost)
have got 50mm and 60 mm alloy ducting for sale plus 25 mm id stainless flexible, 2mtrs long to make up exhaust, pm me if you need or even for advice

I had 22C in my saloon last winter while it was just below zero outside, all with a 1DLC. So heating you Bav should be no problem. I have it split foward and aft as my aft cabins are totally seperate to the saloon.

For maximum warmth in the saloon we turn off the aft cabin heat until 10 minutes before we go to bed, aft run much shorter.

You will not regret your purchase, good luck in fitting.

I think i should have replied to your note - anyway I quess you will read my reply to the other sender. Any problems with your fitting give me a mail. I have also fitted a hot water system just in case you have that to schedule at some time.

In return I hope to rig a cruising chute this weekend and can't figure an arrangement forward of my roller reefing to attach the chute. I have my anchor permanently on the stemhead and while it sounds crazy I think i will attach to the cross bar !!!??? I will run a halyard from the spinnaker pully above the headsail.
