I have decided to change my old stuart turner 5hp petrol for a small diesel in my Vivacity. Any suggestions as to suitable secondhand, hopefully not to expensive engine that might fit the bill? This will probably be a winter project so no hurry but I am going to a boat jumble tomorrow and may spot something.

I would definitely look for a Yanmar 1GM10. I picked mine up secondhand (it had actually been sunk, and reconditioned) for Pds 1,000. Obviously bigger than the Stuart (which is very compact) but not much heavier, and very reliable, with 8hp.

They are a common engine, still in production, and spares are very easy.

I bought mine brand new for £2,100 each, obviously s/h will be cheaper, in my opinion they are not ridiculous new.

Don't forget you will also need for instalation;

45mm Exhaust hose about £30.00 for 2m
45mm water lock about £55.00
anti syphon valve about £35.00
if your boat has a 1inch shaft you will need the coupling drilled out as yanmar provide 3/4 inch, this cost me 10 squid at a machine shop
flexible coupling -- about £35.00
Goosneck if required about £30.00

Not trying to scare you, it is just that you will need to add these items to the list.

If you need anyhelp I will be pleased to tell anything that I experienced, I fitted two to my cat last year so have double experience now, and double bills!!

I am starting to question my self as to the 45mm dimention, I am pretty sure this is right, previously installed on the boat I had 50mm from a 3gm30 and 40mm from an old vetus - how unlucky is that

most boat jumble engines will be knackered, but since you cannot run it under load, how do you tell?

better bet is a re-conditioned one from a reputable outfit. can recommend cellar marine at porthallow in cornwall, but i'm sure there are others.
