Fitting a VHF aerial

Any comments or advice on the above? The boat in question is a Mariah SX18 the set has fitted in dash very neatly, the obvious place would be aft on the stbd side, except that corner is populated by the sternlight-on-a-stick and the fuel filler. The port side aft corner would be neater but would involve a longer cable run and the aerial cable would run along the fwd end of the engine bay within about 12" of the distributor and plug leads, would that affect VHF performance?

Any other hints appreciated.

Its a sort of suck it and see situation. Personally i dont think you will get any interference. However, there is a chance! Prehaps before getting the drill out plug it in do a few test calls with the boat engine on and then underway, if it sound good 'nail' it in place.

Even If you have 10 metres of cable between between your antenna and radio,the loss of RF out of the aerial would be virtually undetectable.
If it was me,I would keep ANY cabling be it co-ax or 12v power line as far away as possible (within reason) for any HT on your engine.
As other have said,why not just assemble it on a temp basis and get somebody to listen to the results on a hand set.
You may well not get rid of all noise completely.

Now why didn't I think of that!

Fixed the aerial bracket to a bit of wood, works fine, I may just leave it on the bit of wood and tow it behind.
