I'm thinking that next year I might fit a topmast/topsail to my (replica) 31 foot smack. I am hoping for a bit more speed, particularly in lighter winds and better performance to windward. Can anyone give me an idea of what it would be worth in terms of performance. Also the main mast has the fittings for a topmast and I thought I would go for a permanent fixture rather than reefable. How much does the extra weight above affect stability. In short pros and cons please from anyone with a similar boat
many thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Which smack do you have; is it a Bawley or Smack?

The smacks often carry their's 'up' all the time, and only some have rigged a system whereby it can be lowered easily.

Assuming you have a fairly stumpy mast (about the same length as the boat), then the topmast would be about the same length again. It makes a HUGE difference to light winds sailing, as the Main Topsail (and Jib Topsail) are in a position high up (more wind) and in clean air (unaffected by rigging).

You'll need shrouds and runners too, else it will bend a lot...

Added bonus of having a topmast, is it makes the boat look much more graceful. When mine is down, the whole boat looks rather stumpy!
