Advice please. I am thinking of replacing my current radio with a Silva S10 DSC/VHF . I am hoping to use my existing antennae. I have never fitted a radio before so any advise will be helpful. I have been told that the fitting is easy, if that is not the case then the air round Hardway will be blue. Please help me keep the peace and tranquility we all crave for and point me in the right direction. Thanks

should be able to use same aerial without any problems - however they can deteriorate and so reduce performance. While I was doing some work on my mast last year I took the opportunity to fit a Vtronic hawk (I had bought it some 5 or more years earlier and never got round to it). Resultant increase in performance was spectacular, and I only replaced the cable through the mast, not that from deck plug to radio.

A bigger problem may well be the connection of a GPS to the radio

As you already have an antenna (singular I am guessing you meant) and presumably a fused 12v supply line for your exixting radio, it should inded be very simple as long it will mechanically mount in the space available with a good airspace at the back. I assume you have a GPS with an NMEA output to connect to the new DSC VHF, the manual of each should allow you to achieve this without much difficulty. NMEA is normally run on a "twisted pair". To achieve this get two lengths of suitable differently coloured insulated wire, place one end of both wires in the chuck of a hand or low speed electric drill, clamp the far ends and run the drill until the wires are neatly twisted together.
