Hi,
just purchased new Volvo 2 blade folding to replace the 'old' one, being some 25 years. Some slight diffferences as no split pin needed, as the new has a locking nut, and the new seems a bit longer. Parts shop tells me all is the same.

The splines have an ali shield with a centre ring (20mm?) slid over them to meet near to the seals, just before the round anode, so then the prop would slide in next and then get fixed by the nut.

Q. does the prop push against this shield ring, or against the end stop of the splines. Thus leaving a slight gap between shield and prop.

Might seem a qeer q but the new prop is just 2/3 mm longer where this is on the spline, and would appear just to miss out on meeting the end of prop shoulder where the splins stops if I dont reduce the lenght of the shield ring.

Taking out the shield then the prop goes in 2/3mm further where it stops on the spline, an dis then 1/2mm from hittting the anode.

So do I file the shield ring a little, or leave, or am I confused !

Any advise welcome

Against the end stop on the splines.
If you are concerned, ask the supplier! You've just spent megabucks on this prop so you should expect them to be helpful........

The shield ring you refer to is the bearing ring. That is the componet which takes all the thrust from the prop and pushes the boat along. Therefore it is more important the prop bottoms out on that and not on the shoulder at the end of the splines

Be aware of the differences between Yanmar and Volvo saildrives and props.
The Yanmar version has a longer slined shaft.
If you fix a Yanmar prop on a Volvo shaft you need a 10mm spacer,
the other way round you will have a gap...

thanks, the boat is now 100 miles away and I cant check again, given the bottom out then appears to be only 2/3 mm is that ok?

Also what then does the shield ring bottom out on ?
thanks again.

I may be wrong but I have always thought that the solid ring with the aluminium dome on it was a line cutter or similar device to prevent thin fishing line getting tangled around the shaft.

I had the same problem to yours when I replaced my Volvo fixed 2-blade propeller with a Radice folding 2-blade propeller on a 120S saildrive. Unfortunately, this was 12 years ago and my detailed memory doesn’t go back that far! I do remember that when I fitted the new propeller it wasn’t right and did not ‘bed’ in properly. I solved the problem by shimming off a few millimetres from the ring on the line cutter as you have mentioned to get a good fit similar to the original propeller.

I may have done a totally stupid thing (I am not an expert) but in 12 years I haven’t had a problem. I don’t know why there should have been a problem. The only thing I can think of is that there were some minor changes to the design of the early saildrives in this area and that the ‘one size fits all’ folding propellers don’t fit early versions.

The prop buts up to and is tightened against the line cutter, the ring with the sharp ally shield.

Appreciate all the replys, also spoke to a volvo man during today.

Have learnt something new that my'ali shield' is in fact a fish line cutter, forgive the scud put up, as a few had said that.

This then gets made tight by the action of the prop now being tight against it as the holding nut is put on.

So I reckon the answer is leave all alone and fit as instructions said. It was the old prop throwing me that was never correct in the first place I conclude.
