Im considering fitting an electric start generator, our present pull start generator requires a leading pluged into same fitting as shore power.
Is it possible to have the new generator wired into to shore power consumer unit.
But when connected to shore power would this damage the Generator.
Thanks for any thoughts Regards steve.

When you fit your 3 position switch it is vital you MUST NOT EVER have both shorepower and generator power feeding together. Therefore it is normal to have 'shorepower' then 'off' then 'generator power' on the selector switch, so the switching cannot overlap.

If the generator is connected to the shorepower when not in phase with the shorepower, you will likely wreck the engine and generator, and could have the thing rip itself off its mounts as it trys to bring itself into phase.

Large ships have Synchro meters and skilled operators to 'parallel' their generators. These would not exist on anything even a fairly large motor boat (say to 60'+) would likely have as standard generator equipment.
