Hmm, the Bass Catching masterclass was not that good and we didn't catch a thing.

Yes, Kwakers did get a bite - I saw it for myself - but high on boat produced coffee, he struck too soon. Not only that, but we had the bu&&ers jumping out of the water around us.

The big success over the weekend was my new prawn pot, which produced a grand haul of at least a pint of big ones. Some were press ganged into hanging on a bass hook and the rest went towards a veritable feast of very tasty prawns - must remember to bring garlic next time. First time I've ever had prawns that are three minutes fresh.

Before.

After.

The lobster pot was not a success and after battling for 30 minutes against wind and tide in my little tender, I managed to lift the pot and gaze at a hundred small crabs.

The pot has been donated to another boater, a nice Chinese restaurant owner!

So was the weather kind to you? Pretty horrid inland. Not even a mackerel caught? I must say the prawns look nice, having got them from shops allmy life,I never like the pre-cooked grey colour, so mostly put them back. Took me a while to realise that they needing cooking to go Pink.

So have all the bass gone now, or do you think one of them saw you and Kawasaki coming and told the rest?

Looking forward to joining you one weekend - let me know if you are out next weekend?

Martyn

The weather was awful on Friday night - it never stopped raining.

We didn't try for Mackerel, but is did catch a large one off the back of the boat on Friday afternoon inside the harbour. There was a sudden boil of small fry, so I lob in a spinner and out came my tea.

Lot's of bass around...and sea trout...but they only came to mock us.

Not sure of next weekend.

The Bass are still catching in Porthmadog but prawns are very much an Anglesey thing.

I used to "fish" for them as a kid off Silver Bay Sands caravan park (used to be a camp site!) just up by 4 mile bridge.

The catch you got really reminded me of those days and three minutes fresh is just unbeatable. We used to occasionally land a lobster - now that was a real treat!

And here am I stuck in my office - harrumph!

Well I have tried everything to catch Bass including standing in a wetsuit up to my knees in surf at RAF Valley beach and the inland water (EVERYONE it seems can catch bass there except me). The tide was out so I had to walk nearly a mile to get to the sea, then the wind blew over my tripod with phone and keys on it,and I gave up.

Just having done all this, a local guy drives up in a land rover, and expertly lands a fish.

I think its a locals thing, they tell you where to fish and what to use, then they go to the proper places and use proper stuff.

My plan is to catch something before the end of 2007 if I can

It's all about Timing.
See by the time We had Rendevoused, discussed The Plan, had a Coffee , retrieved the hidden Prawn catcher, examined the contents, had a Coffee, discerned whether the little evil looking Blennies accompanying the Prawns were in fact Blennies or the dreaded lesser Weavers, searched for the Lobster pot (unsuccessfull first sweep), had a coffee, sailed to the First Port of call (Menai Bridge Pier) moored up.
Transfer to Jeep to motor into the Hinterlands of Llandegfan to collect the sandeels, forward odered the day before, motored back parked the Jeep (cleverly positioned the day before) had a coffee, Sailed of to "The Spot" tackled up tangled up, baited up, sucked digits after spikey prawn attacks and finally (after a well needed coffee) lobbed in various appetising looking cocktails of prawn and the occasional eel. The Bass just teased Us on their way Home.
See it's all about Timing.
By this time, We thought the Gig was up.
So it was time to shove off and do sweep two and seek the Well hidden Lobster Pot.
Timing out again, too much water.
So it was time to berth.
"Time for a coffee? ---- Aye, why not"!
So next Time---

In a nutshell, that was our day summed up perfectly.

Doesn't matter as it was all about not being in the office and out on the water.

Supt ter You Major.
Do we need, nay do We want to let a Raggie in on the Secret?
Then there is DEFRA.
Enviromental issues.
Conservation to consider also.
Hmm, could be safe.
These Raggies look a bit like Tree Huggers to Me.
Although there could be a Commercial angle here.
We could Franchise the Product.
Plus a Mate of mine has a Shrimp/Winkle/ Prawn stall on Rhyl Prom.
Could retire on this One.
Over to You Major Catastrophe, it's Your call/ descision

Prawn catching device? Seems you can catch bucket loads of them in the rockpools around anglesey without getting too wet. Does that count? Are they the same prawns (not the same as such, but related?)

The plan is to go rock fishing this weekend (no not fishing for rocks...) off teh cliffs, rods repaired, reels serviced all ready to go - we just need some fish now.

ALthough there is always pollock in Holyhead by the sound of it as a last resort...

The device is clever.
One does not have to get wet for a start.
It is selective.
IE no little bu%%ers.
Same relatives but only the Grown ups are dished up.

Pollocks in Holyhead?
Yep, there has always been plenty of those!
Oops, sorry spelling again /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Are you prepared to reveal the secrets of the prawn catching device, please? PM will do if you don't want to broadcast.

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh dear. Us successful fishermen don't like revealing our secrets.

All I will say for the moment is that it was a patented catching device that allowed small prawns to escape.

Let me enjoy it for a bit. I've only used it once.
