I fancy taking my fishing rod over to the boat in Portugal, but only ever travel with hand luggage. Is this going to be possible? The rod is about 2m long, and weighs next to nothing. Surely if I put it in the hold it will get trashed. Any suggestions?

Put it in one of those cardboard tubes that posters and the like come in and check it it.

There a cases that you can buy but a piece of plastic drain pipe wit two end caps made from aerosol can caps should fit the bill or cheaper still buy another rod out there.

Speak to the airline, I doubt you'll get it in hand luggage as it won't fit in that lovely little bag checker they have but the sport equipment thing might be a good shout if you "reelly" want to take it. A push bike in a "bike box" costs about £15 so a fishing rod couldn't cost much or any more.

If it's a one piece 2m rod I suspect it may be too long to travel.

But as a last resort your airline's website will give the only definitive answer to this question...

But as hand luggage? You must be kidding!

I have a 4 piece travel boat rod from Shakespeare. It goes in it's tubular zip up case inside my big hold bag. No surcharges, no breakages.

I got it done by our local vet. You need to download a form from the web for the vet to sign. It cost about 40 pounds. You can get it done when you arrive but it takes time and costs more. The stuff our vet used was Virkon.

A couple of years ago we tried to take two very small telescopic rods (no reel, line or hooks) to Spain, gatwick - malaga in hand luggage and was refused.

Did they explain their reasoning? I've had things confiscated, usually with a rather stretched imagination behind their reasoning for their potential for being used as a weapon.

What are you going to possibly do with a fishing rod that might threaten the crew? Poke them in the eye with it? Spank them into submission? Use the hollow centre as a blow gun using home made darts and the tree frog poison you have hidden somewhere?

I have taken a golf club (single) as hand luggage in a tube without question but a fly line was confiscated on the grounds I could use it to garrotte someone.:(

You've got to laugh. I lost an angle grinder. It could have been plugged in somehow, I don't know how and used as a weapon or to cut open the fuselage. Also a telescopic boat hook became a spear. Yet writing pens are allowed. In the hands of the SAS or those similarly trained, they are in fact a deadly weapon. Boot straps would also be a nice garrotte.
