As it looks like a nice weekend coming up, I thought I would take the lad fishing. We have some gear, but have been spectacularly unsuccesful in our attempts to catch supper thus far. Any advice on likely spots around the Blackwater/Colne area, and advice on rig, baits etc, would be very welcome.

There are often boats anchored up off the baffle by the power station but not usually any further up the river. I have also seen fishing charter boats in the Colne near the Inner Bench Head.

The fisherman in the berth next to me says you don't catch anything when the wind is from the east so don't hold your breath!

I couldn't comment about your tackle /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

There is a hole just to the west of the baffle that was always good, have a run around with the echo sounder.
Lug worm with a strip of squid or mackerel as a cocktail or rag worm if you can get it. You can still get bait at froggies place in Latchingdon.

Anywhere there are features such as sandbars with lug or rag for school bass would even try spinning if the water is clear.
But if you can only get squid or mackerel as bait fish in deep water and you should get at least a few whiting oh and change you bait every ten mins good luck

very similar unsuccessful experience to yours. finally been doing some sailing with a pal who is a life long fisherman - successs every time. the difference is knowledge and skill. somehow I had thought that lobbing the right bait over the side would give a result but its not that simple. things like sea bed shape, the state of the tide , gannets diving and catching, - all and more come into play.

conclusion - there is skill in fishing and it most certainly isnt a matter of the right kit and bai alone. would recommend yuou invest in a trip or two on one of the fishing boats you see taking parties out .

I know it does not seem possible for the water to be clear in the blackwater but if the weather is calm you would be suprised
If i do not catch a bass on a lure by the end of this weekend iwill be suprised, well not that suprised but i think my chances are 50/50.

I catch bass in the Crouch simply by lobbing squid off the back of the boat whilst on the swinging mooring and fishing on the bottom.

Depends whether you're going 'fishing' or just fishing to relax. Best time is when the tide turns to go out.
