Caribbean at the moment
I am very keen to catch a fish. Is there any hope of doing this at 20 knots? The zoomy boats in the caribbean seem to do ok. I will happily try anywhere and everywhere between uk and gibralter or the med.

Really, of course, i am after a cast-iron method of defintiely defintely catching a fish, hopefully a really huge gigantic fish, and none of that namby pamby "might work " stuff cos i mean so far, i reckon that fishing shops should get sued since i have bought a fair bit of gear BUT not caught a fish. Ever!

I understand that a stick of C4 deposited into the middle of a swarm of fish is almost quaranteed to achieve results, indeed some of the catch will be ready filletted! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think you have little chance of catching a fish below 30 knots. At slower speeds the fish will be able to see your hook and move out of the way. Alternatively some fisherman have had success by putting bait on the hook and luring the fish to try and eat it.

I would gladly join you in a class action against the so called expert fishing shops. I did a delivery from Palma to Plymouth a few years ago and was told all sorts of rubbish..."cruising speed 8 knots, oh thats perfect"....."motoring not sailing even better!"....."Oh no sir, you'll need a bigger gaff than that, you're going to be hauling in monster fish....daily...if not hourly!" End result, zip, nada, nothing, well not strictly true there was a bit of a panic at one stage when the reel starting screaming madly, everyone charged about grabbing gaffs and nets and even cameras to record the triumphant moment when I finally won the battle of wits against...a binliner (though it was a big one).

you should be aware of the e.u regulations on binliner quoters, if it were not for the spanish we would all have deck loads of binliners no matter what the speed...

Unfortunately the tears of laughter streaming down the photographer's face obviously affected her focusing and my moment of glory was lost forever (except for rather exaggerated retellings of the tale at various bars ever since!).

I suspect that you are failing to invest in the correct technology.
I have noticed on some of the manufacturers pages that you can now buy a colour fishfinder so large it will require the removal of the entire helmstation. It also costs about the same as your boat. However, the screen can tell you everything from the number of scales of the monster, to (probably) autohelming and casting to a guaranteed catch. For some reason it also tells you the geological structure 500 miles below the seabed. I confess, I m not sure how that is an advantage.
Its wise not to set the zoom function too high, or the close up view on the screen of an implied 600ft mackerel may cause you to make a false boast back in the marina.

tcm,

You just have to accept that you are a crap fisherman. Us real fishermen catch fish regardless of speed.

Seriously, you stand a slim chance of a tuna with lure skipping across the top. I've caught fish at 25 knots plus when running home from fishing trip.

There's nothing wrong with Binliners - they are a well made, if inexpensive motor-boat. I really must protest in the strongest manner to you hooking one of these and calling it sport. I will be raising this in the next commons meeting....zzzzzzz

A reasonably capable leisure and pleasure fisherman for some free advice would be most useful. Give Rex a call he can catch anything in an empty pond!!!!!

Re: I wondered when you\'d show up!

Work, Dave, work, being your own master and slave driver doesn't leave a lot of leisure time!!
Me and my team are just of to do the 3M's Gel coat and polishing course, should be a "fun " day as the Marina is B****y freezing! Some lucky devil is getting their boat polished for free!!!

What exactly are you up to these days Julian? Maybe I missed a bit along the way, but it does sound exiting - working with boats that is!
