Fishing around Greece

Always worth towing a lure behind, Tuna, Bass and a type of Barracuda about. The best time though is winter for fishing. It is a bit of an odd set up regarding fishing in Greece, ie you need a licence! Not to sure how this works if on a Brit registered boat (I dont think it applies) I have a small fishing boat(Greek registered) I have to have a licence for the boat plus a licence for myself if I fish on a Greek friends boat. The Greeks are very strict on scuba spearfishing, do it in May and you get fined heavily as it is out of season. there is also a set limit on how many fish you can take, when you see the Italian tourist slaughtering anything that swims you would understand why, they catch octopus, batter them on the rocks then throw them away. Must be a macho thing. On a plus note, a friend caught a 100 kilo tuna this time last year, you would get a few sarnies out of that! good luck.

In Ionian i've towed lures behind my boat, fast, slow, deep water and round coast and never had a nibble!
Tried May, June, Sept, Oct.
What is the secret to catching the mythical Greek fish?

These waters have been fished by experts for 5000+ years, therefore due to Darwinain principals, the remaining fish are far better at avoiding hooks than we (or me at least) are of snagging the buggers! Try baiting the line with Dynamite, though use either a long trawl or someone elses boat.

I stand corrected, SWMBO has just reminded me that she 'never has any problem in catching fresh fish' Her technique: Wear a tight top, then walk along the quay to any newly arrived fishing boat and ask nicely - Personally I think there must be more to it than that; as when I've tried it myself it just doesn't seem to work.

Even the Romans used to complain that there were no more fish in the Med! Tend to agree with the Darwinian thing - throw a pizza crust over board at anchor, and huge fish appear, fighting for it. Attach pizza crust to hook and line, no takers whatsoever

Never had a problem catching Tuna in the Ionian in the summer months. Have always taken them to a local restaurant where they have always been happy to cook them for us, they even gut them for us. I have just dropped a line over the back and hoped for the best.

Having been trying for some years to catch fish in Greek waters without success,we have developed a method which works fairly well.
Make up a line with about 10 hooks and a weight.
Don't waste time baiting it...
Drop it over the side of the boat so that it goes about 3 or 4 feet down and hold it there.
Then throw lots of small bits of the mornings leftover bread around the line.
Within inutes, hundreds of fish wil appear and start to feed greedily wait till they are clustered around the line, and pull it up suddenly...with any luck, some of the little bu**ers will hooked .
DAMNED UNSPORTING ....BUT IT WORKS!!!!!

I live in Greece and for many years I was fishing with very poor results. Until last year. I then saw my friends from the club (first time they cruised Cyclades for holidays) catching enough fish to eat.

I then realised the main point and changed my fate.

I 'm no longer fishing. I am trying to catch fish. It's not the same. It's a change of attitude and mentality.

I no longer choose the most convenient bait but an efficient one (which is -at least- shrimps). I change my hooks every time I think they are not very pointy any more and I don't wait for them to become rusty.

Believe me, this change of mentality allowed me to catch enough fish to have dinner every time we moored in a bay.

Good luck!
