My generator runs but does not produce electricity. I've been told its the condensers If so where in the UK can I buy replacements. Don't know if that's the right name for the part I will try to attach photo. I don't want service kit just these parts.

They are 80micro Farid Electrolytic Capacitors with a 450Volt limit at 50 Hz

There is a manufacturer and ID number that Google may help you locate a supplier of just Google the specification for a suitable alternative

The part number in your photo is shown as C870EG3 and the manufacture Arcotronics. Arcotronics are now Kemet part of Yageo. That part number does not exist anymore but the closest I can find is this...

Product

If you click on the datasheet link there is an explanation of the part numbering system. The second C in the new part number that was E in the old part number refers to marking, which is unimportant. What the old part number does not indicate is terminal style which is the 5 in the new part number. I can't see the terminal style in your photos but I suspect it is different. If you used the new part you may have to make up some connectors.

If the generator has not run for a long time the residual magnetism in the field coil disappears and the generator then will not self excite. In this case there is a process called flashing the field coil to re-establish some residual magnetism.

It can be done with a 9v battery, but I assume the orientation of the connection + & - needs to be correct. Hook on the battery to the field winding slip rings and leave on for ~ 30 seconds. Then disconnect and see if the generator establishes an output.

This might rule out the need to replace the condensers (capacitors).

For the capacitor if you do need them then here you go ...

Pardon our interruption...

Thanks again .. I have no experience with generators. It seems there is a big difference in prices for the various brands of capacitor which I find somewhat confusing .

I found this on Google

If the cables to the field are not labelled find out which goes to Neg as this will be the neg side of the battery. it suggest s ~ 3 - 5 seconds ...

Flashing a generator field coil, also known as exciting the field, restores residual magnetism in the generator exciter field so that it can build up voltage when starting. Here are some steps for flashing a generator field coil:

  1. Disconnect the field coil leads from the bridge rectifier's positive and negative terminals.

  2. Measure the exciter field resistance from the F+ to the F- lead.

  3. Connect the F+ lead to the battery's positive pole.

  4. Touch the F- lead to the battery's negative pole for about 3 to 5 seconds.

  5. Look for an arc when disconnecting the F- lead. The arc indicates a complete circuit.

The arc is likely the condensers discharging
