I'd be grateful for some advice. We're planning on visiting The Wash this Summer. I'm aiming for Wells first, but would welcome some advice on good anchorages, and places to visit etc. I have a Westerly Storm 33 twin-keeler, so I can dry out OK. I keep the boat in Ramsgate, but haven't got further North than Lowestoft before.

Many thanks, Anthony.

Wells or Brancaster is your best bet......

You could always actually come into the Wash and visit Fosdyke Yacht Haven.

MrCramp always seems to put people off coming into the Wash.

You can anchor in Clayhole down in the Boston corner, there is a great anchorage between the Ant sand and the Long sand.
The Parlour channel no longer have any bouys but is good to go through at low water. We went through a few weeks ago and it is has moved SE a 100yards or so, we saw hundreds of seals.

There is also Wisbeach and Kings Lynn....I have only been into Lynn once.

after lowestoft, the only anchorage that i know of that offers any protection from the elements is at Sea Palling, there are tidal defences there and the entrance is marked by an east and west Cardinal mark,as for wells, its a cracking little town to visit,if you are unsure about entry just call up the harbourmaster and he will come out in the launch and guide you in,on friday just gone he did it for a 32ft parker and on saturday a catalina 36 with a 1.5 draught.

best to time wells for the hour of high water,at present they are ploughing the chanel,on saturday i took the entrance in a f5-6 with north in the wind and i did see 8ft on the depthsounder.

I did anchor on friday night at Hunstanton, theres an anchorage there, its marked on the chart

Hi Anthony
More information on the future of Kings Lynn Here though it seems the marina development isn't likely to start yet, maybe in another year or two we might see something a bit better. The town itself has already had a lot of investment but unless things have changed dramatically since my last visit, there aren't a lot of facilities for boat owners. Looking at there myself as a possible base, but not sure I want to wait till 2010 before things start.

Kings Lynn is actually quite a pleasant little market town. Not a great deal there, and not much in the way of stunning architecture or scenery, but its not too bad a place if you fancy seeing an average fen market town for something different to do one weekend.
