First time Channel crossing - take 2

Re: massivley bigged up

It is highly lazy gittish, I admit. BUT I have to be in UK this Saturday and next Thursday (work) so holiday is Sunday-Weds, non negotiable. Really want to see this location and dont fancy 2x 170nm legs, and SWMBO fancies it even less. So deliv skipper is the only answer, and the nice/competent guy who skippered our boat on a charter last year is availalbe, so that made my mind up. Also weahter for next week looks amazingly good - no gradient wind

If wx is ok I plan to leave corsica 2 am or 4am ish Weds am next week and be back in Antibes for lunch. So, not at all lazy gittish for return trip. If wx is rubbish boat will have to stay in Ajaccio till I can get it back.

Have you been to these islands and N. Sardinia? It looks really fab. Boat is being stocked up today on Antibes-supplied food and beer, just in case the blackberry pate or chestnut beer is yuk /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The only thing you have to watch and not that it will bother you is the overfalls as you enter to the platte as it can get rough depending on state of tide (ask manatee and the others on MBM cruise last year)

Yes, I'm still picking bits of seaweed out of my hair! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Having the comfort of the other boats around was a big help though - would not like to have been out there by ourselves - would always recommend crusing with others (if possible) in unfamiliar waters.

Re: massivley bigged up

nope, Been to NW corsica but not bonif, or any further s than ajaccio, nor sardinia. Ajaccio just ornery city really where the highlight is a very long table in the public library which is quite good altho not really worth a special trip. Ijn fact, it didn't even get a mention tom issits review of Corsica whereas lardy emma lunches where he (and me a bit) scoffed the lot and she cooked even more the next day and the day after that until lunch took till 4pm used up half the text.

NW corsica v big, nice and empty, pink rocks like Esterel, restaurants so-so. Worth a stop at an anchrage or two on way back but mebbe no time?

Excellent idea to take fr food, as eytie food is mostly crap and people who gush about it never say anything other than "oh, we had fresh tomatoes and some fresh basil it was wonderful" which implies it was the best thing ie don't go near anything cooked. No reason for eyetie island-stamped food chucked on ship to Sardinia to be better that italy really qv IOW v uk and Corsica v France and er Robben island v S africa.

ahem, anyway, you have to have breakfast at the Terraces d'aragon at top of the escalier (steps) aragon with fab views, it says here. It also says that the whole place is ded expensive, but it's probably lying. For safety, check out the red Michelin guide.

appar you should make it known you are english and not from antibes at all cos they hate the french, and much prefer brits who also have a name for hating french.

Re: massivley bigged up

Exlunt. Ta for info. Will report back on Sardinia, we dont plan on bothering with NW Corsica, not enuf time this trip

Re: PoW

I'm in Uk until Friday am ... then have to go to CI, returning to France Tuesday pm (I think).

I think SE Corse and NE Sardinia are beautiful ( although avoid Olbia - like Marseilles without the style !) ... there are a few 'races' between the two islands allegedly, particularly when windy from West , not as familiar with rest of Eastern Corsican seaboard although some rate it very highly.

Good idea to stock up before leaving .. as Bonifacio is somewhat limited for fresh ( apart from seafood) and NE Sardinia is dedicated to the tourist with its consequent limitations ..

Re: PoW

Oi, stop hijacking my thread you lot with yer poncy mediterranean weather and clear blue water. I WILL enjoy my murky water, tides and overfalls, at least for the next few months /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So, I will be leaving tomorrow or Friday, direct from Torquay. Leaving aside the poking your nose out and having a look bit, which day looks best?

Re: PoW

probly friday.

http://www.windfinder.com/forecasts/wave_british_isles36.htm

shows waves height and TONS better indicator of whether you have nice or nasty trip - and on friday it's longer time since t'windy weather innit.

under a metre is not very wavy, and as long as its 45degreesish offthe nose all fine. I cd still go into a sea with rated 4- 4.5 metres - there isn't actually a wall of water woomf stright atya

i think i might try choose a time when wind and wave direction and tide are all going to westwds.

E Coli more hazardous than those waves

Sorry!

Friday looks better. On the other hand delaying the Torquay departure gives the council an extra 24hours to dump another load of sewage, so praps go tomorrow to be on safe side /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
