Hi,

Looking at getting into boating after a few years of sitting on the sidelines.

Have found a 1991 Sealine 190S Attache near us in York UK. Re-engined in 2019 with a volvo AQ171C

Does anyone have any experience of this boat or engine?

Will be used on the river for at least the next year as we learn (comes with trailer).

Thanks,

Our first boat too. Ours was a 195 Attache
What a super towable boat. We had many holidays in what was then Yugoslavia, Adriatic Italy and Med Spain.
The kids were small then so ideal. We would take it to campsites on the way.
Very well made spacious boat for its size and no problems that I’m aware of.
Thinking of it brings back some great memories

Aq171 2ltr DOHC not to be confused with 170 3ltr straight 6

common problems were leaking raw water pumps leaking and corroding cam gears via notched drive belts along with timing ignition problems
Quite a bit of alloy involved so not conducive to sea water

I had the Sealine 22 sport from 1986 build. I loved it, we had it re engined with a VP D3.
Ok so not the same boat as the one you are getting, but very close. For a 22 ft boat it had a great use of space, 2 double berths and full heads and galley. Great build quality too.

AQ171 is an original engine for this boat. Must have been re-engined with an old engine, as not been built since the 90's.

The 171 is an interference engine, so ensure the cam belt has been changed recently, or get it done sharpish otherwise you risk a ruined engine.

It's actually 2.5 litre.. Based on the 2.3 litre B230 block but with a modified stroke to increase the capacity.

Correct which is why it was rebadged as Aq25(1)

Our first boat was also a 195 Attache of mid 80s vintage. It had a VP petrol engine and was used mainly on the Thames plus one holiday in mid Wales. I towed her with a Rover 2 litre. I couldn`t get over the view of the Sealine looming over us in the rear view mirror. We kept her for three years from new and IIRC didn`t have any problems at all.

The actual boat hull and fittings is unlikely to cause grief and visual inspection is usually sufficent.
Outdrive problems will be hidden. Pay close forensic attention to the previous owner( s) alleged servicing of the outdrive.
Best to do everything/anything while boat is out of the water.
Neglect , not use, is the achilles heel of outdrives.
Get somebody who knows about outdrives to give it a once over before you purchase.

One simple check for you is to undo the little stainless steel drain plug in the gearbox at bottom of leg and drain out a tiny quantity of oil.
If its clear and bright fine, if its like a milky mousse you have some extra thinking to do regards purchase.
Nothing is ourageously expensive to fix on old outdrives especially if you are handy with spanners and Elastoplast, there loads of aftermarket bits around especially on Ebay.
Just keep in mind a complete outdrive leg swap with a refurbished unit could cost a fair proprtion of what you may have paid for the boat in the first place.

Had similar sized boat with this set up it would give about 17/18 knots and the fuel consumption was not that bad either flat out about 8-10 GPH.
Your problem will be getting duel.
Finding petrol will be a constant problem and filling up cans at your local supermarket and lugging it back to the boat will lose its attraction. At marinas it appears to be around just under £1.70 per litre (at the moment.)
A careful dilligent search could get you diesel at around 90P or with flagrant tax avoidence at around 60p.
This one reason you should be able the negociate a real deal on any petrol boat.
Good luck.

Hi, Thanks for all your replies, the survey is today so will see what that comes back with.

Sealine - 190S For Sale in York | Acaster Marine Ltd |

Offered 14k which was accepted straight away, so think on reflection, i've offered too much! My gut is telling me 10-12 probably more reasonable (assuming all in good order).
The deal is not done until the money is handed over in reality.
The survey is bound to bring up some stuff which wasn't declared so you can continue to haggle.

Looks nicely refurbed, so long as the mechanicals stack up good be a great boat
Anything mechanical can be fixed, at a price so maybe haggle a bit after survey

We have all been there and anybody who ses they have not is probably a fibber. .
The buy in haste regret at leisure nightmare is usually stage 2 of boat buying.
The 3rd stage before you ask ................
Just fix everything and get on with boating , making sure to keep all invoices away from the wife. Stage 4 :)

Got an initial view from the surveyor, waiting for the full report - The boat hull is very good, nice and dry with just a few minor stress cracks to the gelcoat, these are only cosmetic, engine and leg good, oils good, propeller and casings good, bellows good, controls good. She started almost instantly on the turn of the key and after a very short warm up ran smoothly with controls working correctly the hull interior is good as is the upholstery. The electrics all worked apart from the battery condition metre on the switch panel the fire equipment all in good order as was the bilge pump, the compass has a bubble so its accuracy cannot be guaranteed, all i all a nice craft with no serious faults found and ready to go, i think it is good value for the price and you would struggle to find better

haha true, i was hoping for something to negotiate with from the survey, as i think i've over offered ( as the offer was accepted without negotiation), opps! know to go into lower next time! :)
