Last week when getting on the boat, a gust whipped a genoa sheet and flicked my glasses overboard in the marina. Therefore a forced swim but recovered the glasses by feel - too murky to see.

Not nearly as cold as I had expected. If fact, apart from the wind - up to F7 gusting 8/9 - the weather was fantastic and we all got home frazzled.

I will tie the glasses on before getting on board next time.

Sorry to be fussy but...

...Genny sheets should really be tight and cleated up when not in use. It's very tempting to use one as a handhold when moving about a parked boat, and if they are not made fast bigger splashes than those made by spex can be expected.

Another galsses rescue...

I had to go up up my mast last weekend to recover a halyard which a crew had let go in a strong crosswind which was blowing it sideways out of reach. Near the top the rocking of the boat caused me to hit the mast, knocking my glasses off. Somehow I managed to catch them with my foot as they went fluttering downwards to a certain death. Must have been my lucky day.

Mine went the same way last year, went forward to pick up the mooring and as I straighted upright, the (taut) genoa sheet flicked them off! Claimed on the household insurance personal posessions(Eagle Star) and got a new pair without any problems. I now tie them on - when I remember of course!
Also got burgled last week so will see if they are as good on a much larger claim - so far its not loooking good - over two weeks just to replace the broken door glass?!

My only really expensive purchase of a pair of sunglasses coincided with sailing a regatta at Pwllheli. I was on foredeck. First hoist of the kite, sail hit sunglasses - over the side. In confusion, sail bag followed. Neither recovered.

Having never lost a winch handle I managed to lob 2 overboard in the same race the other week. One plain stupidity but the other was quite impressive..... it was safely "home" in a pocket in the cockpit when a genoa sheet wrapped round it on a tack and neatly flicked it overboard. Much discussion followed regarding the merits of locking, and floating winch handles (we ground the catch off last year as they were too fiddly while racing). Decided that we wouldn't go back for it in a race anyway and it would me more disturbing seeing handle floating away than sinking!

<a pair of Wayfarers which I left on the bottom of the river>

i know some people don't much like dinghy sailors but isn't that a mite drastic?

Re: Sorry to be fussy but...

You're right. I had just eased them a little to look at some fraying on the UV strip.
