first signs of hazing in sail drive oil

Sail driveoil being changed for the first time in three years. ...my bad i know...now what I see on the dip.....it's not milky, well, it sort of is, in the wrong light with the eye of faith....

I plan to change it and see what it looks like mid season....does that sound reasonable.....

Also, where can I find out how much oil I need for a volvo sail drive (S120)?

About 2.6 litres for the 120s (assuming you have the boat out of the water and are draining via the drain plug at the bottom).

Whilst it is out and you are slightly concerned, you should really replace the two back to back seals (one to keep oil in and one to keep sea water out)...

The whole unit with the seals in comes out with just two more screws undone (after removing the anode screws). Take care - it's heavy at the back and you don't want to clunk the gears as you pull it out. If you're not confident at changing the seals themselves then I am sure a local engineering workshop could.

Hope this helps... but I'd try not to go back in the water and keep fingers crossed for another season.

I take it the oil is the standard engine oil... The saildrive should have a sticker on it if it's supposed to be any different.

According to the manual you need 2.8 litres if hat helps.

Capacity is in the Engine Instruction Book, 2.8l approx. If boat is out of water, change seals now, If it goes "very" milky mid season, lift out will make change very expensive.
 
I would change the seals also. I've just done this on mine. My boat was in the water for 3 1/2 months, and the oil colour wasn't good when it came out.

I've just changed the two oil seals on the prop shaft (also two o-rings on the part that pulls out as described by Martin_J)
