My life might have just got a little easier....

My boss was invited sailing yesterday by one our suppliers on an ex global challenge yacht in the solent...

I had a peek at the weather forecast, and sniggered to myself yesterday...

Well...... he came back into work this morning, still on a complete high!..... 45knots over the deck, and he loved it!.... he's quite into active stuff anyway, and this was for him the perfect introduction to yachting..... i couldn't shut him up about it all day!..... they even sent the daft [--word removed--] out on the foredeck..... he kept saying "I can't believe how much power they've got....!".... "helming was bloody brilliant!"

So, a solid F8... not the normal preferred 1st sail, and I'm frankly amazed that they even went out.... but hey it worked for him!... and I guess the boats are built for it.....

Now maybe he'll understand why I sometimes try to slip away a bit early on a friday afternoon /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Well, there is another side to it. Similar situation, v rich friend I had tried to interest in sailing went on corporate sail, just like your boss, on Group 4 boat. Big winds, loved it. Only trouble is, he thought that's how it always is, or should be, and, taking a trip on my boat - day turned out to be motoring half the day (I reckon more than 50% of days are like that) and then a nice sail in F4. He was nice about it, but you could tell he was not exactly excited, and I reckon that is the last of him on SMALL boats like mine. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Funnily enough I took some clients out yesterday on a Global Challenge yacht in the Solent and was concerned on the way down considering Wednesday's weather, but what a change it was yesteday. We only had an hour of rain and that was while we were down below having lunch.

As a motor cruiser owner, I wasn't sure what to expect, but have to say we all had a great day, and were looked after wonderfully by a fantastic crew.

I'm not sure I could get used to all the faffing about with sails or having to cope at odd angles, but can definitely say that for a group of total sailing virgins we all enjoyed it very much.

My first sailing experience was a weekend with SunSail - Saturday F5/6, Sunday F7 gusting 8. Absolutely exhilirating, one of my best memories was sitting up on the windward edge of the cockpit holding onto the guard rail with one hand, a mug of soup in the other (it was October) looking down almost vertically straight into the oggin. The weekend was a birthday present from SWMBO who was hoping I'd get it out of my system - failed dismally, it was days before the grin left my face.

My second sailing experience a few weeks later was a F2 motor/drift/sail to Cowes and back. Still brilliant but for different reasons - best memory was sailing back towards Hamble as the sun went down with barely another boat in sight - and those few at some distance; incredibly peaceful, almost humbling.

So my first experiences covered opposite ends of the spectrum and I am now definitely hooked. Still haven't convinced SWMBO to have a go tho' /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cheers,

Don't forget F8 in the Solent is only a light breeze for those boats, which were capable of sailing the Southern oceans - several times over.

Why don't you invite him to join us in Cherbourg so we can tell him a tale or two /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif?
