Hi all

A friend recently told me of a fabulous documentary about a young Norwegian man who decided to go sailing to the South Pole. He'd never sailed before. He bought a small cruising yacht - and did just that! Apparently there was a documentary on TV a couple of months ago - filmed by himself, and 2 other waifs and strays he picked up in Argentina - which was just incredible. Highlights included playing the flute among the ice and whales surfacing to listen, and one of the lads lying down next to a Walrus (yes - a Walrus), only to get bitten. They survived, and made it back after many trials and tribulations. Crazy.

Did anyone see it? Does anyone know anything about it (i.e. date of transmission, channel, name)? I'd love to get hold of a copy from the channel which aired it but need to get some more info on it first.

Any info much appreciated! Thanks.

I remember watching the documentary. I think the details as reported by your friend may be incorrect. My memory is not clear but I think the Norwegian had a lot of sailing experience prior to setting off for the pole, most of it single-handed. I think he sailed the boat from Norway down to Argentina. His boat was basic but appeared to be well-found. The two he picked up in Argentina hadn't sailed before. It was a good programme, with some great photography. Sorry - I can't remember the name of it but I think it was on BBC2.

Frankly Sir I think you are talking B*llacks... Walruses in Antarctica??? REALLY?

Do have heat stroke?.. if so I would suggest you stick your head in the fridge or sail to the pole yourself.

The film is called 'Berserk in the Antarctic'. It's had lots of film festival showings and has been on TV a few times - I think I saw it on the Discovery channel originally. It's on the Internet Movie Database at

I've not seen it for sale but you might be able to contact the original production company - TV2 in Norway I believe.

Hope this helps.
