Just got back from our first flotilla after having a great time :)

We spent a week sailing and motoring around Levkas, Greece. As we only booked one week before travelling we had to take the only boat left; a Jaguar 27'. I wanted to get something around 34'+, so that'll be next year :) The weather, although always sunny, was a bit changeable wind-wise, going from flat calm to a F6. As we had only recently passed our RYA quals (DS for me and CC for SWMBO) and this would be our first time alone in a yacht, we were really looking forward to it, and I'm pleased to report that everything passed off without a hitch :)

SWMBO only got nervous once, so I have just one question; what was the best way to handle this scenario? - The wind was predicted to get up nicely in the afternoon so sailing should be good, and we could sail anywhere from our north-facing mooring, which was in a bay with hills all around. A mile north of us was a small island so we sailed around and headed there for lunch anchored on the west (lee) side. No problems so far. However, when we came out of the lee under motor to head south to our bay, the wind had picked up from the east, creating north/south rollers, causing this little boat to pitch a bit (the mast doing a fair impression of a metronome). In an attempt to improve this situation I decided to head into wind and hoist the sails and then set a course to S/E and at a suitable point turn to S/W and head to the bay. The thinking behind this was that it would be preferable to be heading into the waves as much as possible (close-hauled) as opposed to be getting hit side-on (beam reach).
The funny thing was, on the first day of sailing we were on a beam reach with a stronger wind but hardly any waves and were flying along with only the genoa up.
Any comments/advice would be very much appreciated

Spartochori?

Skorpios?

Yep, a bit of sail would help to steady the boat but with waves coming from astern and the wind on the beam I would have just let out a bit of head sail, headed south and enjoyed the ride.

Watch out for the hidden rocks between Meganisi and Skorpios. They are on the charts but only appear on chart plotters if you zoom in. They sometimes attempt to mark them but the markers don't last long.

First off - congratulations to you both on your first solo voyage!

Had a very similar situation when we took a bareboat from Lefkada and were on route to Ithaki. Wife got a bit nervous as the wind strength increased so we reefed right down and she took the helm. After a while she managed to avoid her dinghy sailing tendencies to round up in the gusts and we just sat them out until she was comfortable and confident nothing was going to happen to the boat. (Me remaining happy, positive and confident thoughout although rather unsure about where we would find shelter in Ithaki)

Once she was happy with the boat handling we called it a day, abandoned plans to go to Ithaki and scarpered back into Syvota to hide.

We spent the evening holed up and very happy to have made the 'right' decision. :D

There is no absolute right or wrong, just lots of choices. The 'right' decision is always the one you are both happy with afterwards.

Do flotilla boats have chart plotters these days? I'm not sure they even had GPSes when we used to do flotillas in the late 90s.

Oh yes they do! sailingholidays.com bennies 323 Great boats and RayMarine chartplotter with GPS. Bring your own card for the plotter.

No not an employee, just a very happy customer who bought his first boat after a holiday with them. Now on second and a few grand lighter in the bank, but hey, you can't take it with you

My view is that the North Ionian is one of the best areas for a holiday.

What is not so obvious (to us soft Southern pooftas) is that a little island does tend to have a significant height. So much so that topography becomes a vital part of weather understanding.

Most harbours are completely benign, and only respond to the gradient wind.

A few trade on it. Vasiliki is wind heaven for kiters and boarders.

Others don't. Frikes is a flippin nightmare.

Kioni and Big Vathi do predictable diurnal weather.

Another oddity is the channel between Levkas and Nidri. Almost irrelevant to anything, you can guarantee 0-7 in every direction for less than a minute.

In the UK we tend to look at the forecast for the day and decide 'one reef no.2 jib'. Greece in Summer requires a lot more flexibility. The water is very very deep, so that wave patterns take a very long time to develop.

To surmise. Greenest, best infrastructure, lovely people, inexpensive (pending) and, well, just easy.

Vonitsa, in the Gulf of Amvrakia. Very nice :)

We were on the lee of Vouvalos, as the easterly picked up. This meant that the wind and waves were coming from the port side as we headed south back to Vonitsa, making for a lot of sideways rotation. Although I managed to reduce this as described above, but I was curious as to how you professionals on her get around this problem :)
