Greetings all,

I bought a boat at the Southampton Boat show (Quicksilver 580). Thrown in with the deal was a coat of Antifouling.....Question is, do you neead a primer coat before applying the first coat?. Also, should it be hard or soft antifouling?.

The boat will be moored on the Hamble (i.e. Muddy, and a few stones).

Thanks in advance for advice.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

You don't need an undercoat, just make sure the surface is clean, grease free and dry. You will need to assess how far up the hull you wish to paint and this is dictated by the water line on the hull. You will need hard antifoul as yours is a planing boat. Soft antifoul is for slower boats like yachts.

G'day Jenko,

I apply an epoxy based primer and antifoul it as soon as the primer goes tacky, this provides a good bond.

Hope this helps
