Hi an ex-lurker here,

I am Broads based with an old-ish Broom Crown with twin Perkins 145s which I have used for sculling around and generally relaxing. However I am bored to death of the 5 mph limit and will be going out coastal hopping. Due to a poorly timed "foot stamping exercise" I also find my self jobless. So to capitalise on this a month or two on the boat I thought.

I have only managed short coastal hops before, so my plan was to work down the coast in 40 mile or so jumps. Gt Yarmouth, Bradwell, Ramsgate/Dover and so on. Trying to avoid the much maligned Happy1 safety syndrome I obviously need to buy some more gear - a couple of coastal flare packs and a spare VHF should suffice - and I will of course trade in the Blakes Broads map for some real charts - I have a Magellan hand held GPS so navigation should not be a problem.

Now to the questions:

1. I single hand on the Broads, there are no regulations about single handing pleasure craft across shipping lanes are there?
2. I will want to go to France - maybe IoW - Cherbourg or perhaps Dover - Calais, I have all the paperwork etc.. but is the Crown really up to it?
3. I hear the Solent is busy should I book ahead with Marinas or just turn up?
4. A neighbour recently bought a sports cruiser which had a forum burgee - mouse / martini glass with a 1,000 written on it. I've got it :) can I fly it as I have only got, well one post.

Planning to set sail on Sunday or maybe Monday - perhaps Tuesday who cares I am jobless.

You are going to have a fab time, I wish I can join! My boss might let me go...

Number 1 question! I like to go out to sea on my own but I found that my insurance says "single handed from sunrise to sunset " so I am not really covered to stay out at sea at night! That means no anchoring only marinas or Harbors at night! Check your insurance otherwise ok. No regulations to stop you but think of safety, what happens if you get hurt? Or fall over?

Number 2 question: if the crown can go along the coast it can go to France there is not much difference

Number 3 question: if you do not book my advice would be to start early in the day at about sunrise and get into marinas at about lunch time, gives you loads of time for putting things right, just in case.

Number 4 question: No you must not fly the burgee because you will attract too much attention

Tom

I agree, but if I was new to coastal hopping, I would want company aboard. It's reassuring to share navigating decisions (or not!?)
Mooring in some places can be tricky unless assisted, but often you can call on marina staff for a hand catching rope thingies.
My insurance won't let me go singlehanded at all, I think.

Good luck anyway- sounds fun

Hang on a bit - Are you telling us that there is a poster on here who has posted over 1000 posts AND bought a 1000 burgee and .... then given it away ........ shock horror .......

either you sneaked over the garden fence one night and pinched it /forums/images/icons/mad.gif or you must be one special person to be given it .....anyway welcome to your first post !!!!!

Thanks for the welcome! I did not steal it, I gave up climbing garden fences a while ago :) - I liked the look of it and asked him where he got it from - he said it was on the boat when he bought it - we spoofed for it and I won. Fair and square. I had been lurking around here for a while when I relaised that I had a coveted 1,000 burgeee. I shall of course fly it with pride and lie blatently about it.

Thank you all for the advice (and the private messages!) I shall log in and keep track and will ask some pretty silly questions in the near future.

No thanks Pete, unless you happen to have a dinghy and outboard in your "spares". I will just plod along, waving to all and flaunting the flag. A full wine locker, a bottle of headache tablets and a safety line should do the trick.

I on the other hand have just cleared the 1000 posts but have not ordered the 1000 burgee - so looks like a swap is in order - I'll give you mine if you give me yours .... and then were both Happy ones!!!

Hi Claire,
Like the sound of your plans - being a Broads boater myself I too am planning some coastal hops when I have sussed the trivial matter of navigation.

One tip from the Surveyor who looked at my boat is that where a boat has been used on a river for some time it is not uncommon for sludge to build up in the bottom of the diesel tanks. Once out on the 'blue and crinkly' things can get a bit wobbly and said sludge causes filters to block up and engine to stop...not good methinks!

Took our Princess 32 on an epic voyage from Lowestoft to Gt. Yarmouth last year and dropped an electric pump to the bottm of the fuel tank first - switched it on and got reassuringly clear diesel from the bottom. Also went in company with another boat - very reassuring.

Welcome abroad.if that Broom of yours has never been off the Broads check and double check again that you do not have any gunge in bottom of fuel tank.It could give scary time if 30 years worth of poo decides to visit your engine/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.
Ps let the Meway forumites know if you intend visiting Medway.Queenborough is useful stop on your way to the loonies and sea rage specialists down in the Solent

I had the Broom Ocean 37 which is exactly the same hull as your Crown. In one year I took her across the channel 44 times counting coming back again. So! Is your Crown up to it? Yes! I would rather be aboard her than some later craft I can think of. She will be wet in heavy weather but safe.
