Looking to take Wellyboots across the channel to Portishead for the first time tomorrow.

Looking to set off 2 hours before LW and anchoring off Penarth Pier for lunch before following the tide up.

A sensible decision for a first trip? (I have been around the islands a few times, now looking to land for an evening)

Yes. Have you planned your return....?

You'll have your comms frequencies pre-planned, and be aware you may be sharing some of the space with merchant traffic coming and going....

The Bristol Port Company's site advises of up to 5 shipping movements on Saturday 10 August here ( http://www.bristolport.co.uk/shipping-information/forward-movements ) You may need to log in as 'guest'.

You may also need a l-o-o-ng anchor warp should you need to stop anywhere other than the lock-in basin at Portishead.

Enjoi!

Plenty of sandbanks to sit on while waiting for the tide:)

I like portishead. The new morrisons local in the marina is very handy.

Stick to the deep water for maximum tidal help. I usually lock out at lw-2 then goto steep holm first. By then the tide will be changing.

Check the lockin times, it is a pain stemming the tide at portishead if you are waiting to lockin. Sometimes lockins are only every 60 min

Dont worry about avonmouth traffic, you will see them miles off.

No sandbanks for Wellyboots - she is a fin keeler :(

A few years ago a 45 footer fin keeler grounded and sat upright through low tide after racing from Cardiff to
Portishead....The skipper was South Wales RNLI big wig and the rescuers were the boys from Avonmouth...

I think it was one of those steel yachts with a wide fin keel...Many piccies at the time and the income financed the
rescuing boat for much of the next year. :)

Standing upright is not the exclusive right of bilge keelers!
