Yep in a planning hull and local knowledge.
The bits in between the rocks still have quite a bit of depth.
However as you know the pictures don,t really illustrate all .
Because there is such a range of tide rushing through a small narrows the current can reach up to about 8 knts.
Raggies have to beware of the current = depth. cos they,ve got keels and stuff which can catch on the bottom.
The bottom of The Straits paricularley in the Swellies area is a series of troughs and lumps(don,t ask me to enlarge but it is) as you can see from my amature illiutrasions theres lots of sticky out bits.
Tried to get some pics Sat pm but the Sun was bugging me
Power boats taking care at High water = OR- 4 hours don,t have a problen if sticking to the transits provided.
Different scenario for the raggies(Bless em)! drawing more water and drawing less power their window is considerably smaller.
Most Raggies seem to know when to go through.
xept for last Sat evening when I saw a raggie attemp at L.A.T in a "put put put got no chance of sailing through here vessel" and parked Him self niceley on The Putty.
Got pics but still learning How to.

One of the pilots says something like: "At Low Water Slack Springs, there is still 25% of the tidal range to fall, theoretically giving 2m water over cheese rock [bottom left]. That's the theory. Few choose to test it in practice"

Good photos, btw.

Saw Him going put put put ptut put splutter splut towards the swellies, thought Crikes he ,s a right expert or a newbie! then observed his sudden halt on "Prices Point" not knowing if He was ok or not alerted the Coastgaurd by moby phone just in case. From my vantage point and the digital equivalent of a "box brownie" I could not tell of His situation. (sorry risk assesement in this day and age).
According to the Lads on "The Shout" He had not requested any assistance but when I observered His list to Port I thought I,d better contact The Coastgaurd.
Such is the nature of the place vhf transmission is hindered by "line of sight" when I saw His vessel keel over, thought oh heck maybe He can,t contact CG so I rang the CG.
That in itself was difficult.
Not having the No. to hand , rang SWMBO,-- Snag 1--Moby would not let Me select digit 1--ie 01248 etc --Fortunateley History on Moby let Me Phone "House". "Phone the CG " Says I , in the assuing panic SWMBO (Bless Her) gets Her knickers in a twist and by the time CG phones Me back (cos my 1 digit aint working) He thinks it,s Me on the rocks!
Classic case of (send three and fourpence were going to a dance) misconstrued information for our younger viewers!
Anyway all was well,Skipper ok, boat ok, Swellies in a good mood.
Not a place to mess with at Low Water as one can see.
In fact a "Lesson" Don,t muck about with The Sea!
Got to ditch My Moby Phone no good with a "Sticky 1 " digit .
Hate the things , how did We manage without them?
Bloody Things!

I'm sure it was the right thing to do - I would be grateful in similar circumstances! Was he coming through at slack water or low water? It looks like he had come from Menai Br. going towards PD, but I thought that was the wrong end for you.

If he was going the other way, then he was almost through!

Andy

P.S. Have you got anything set as a forum signature?? (like a blank page!). Pleading technological ignorance is no longer admissable, cos you can Post Pictures On The Internet /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

He was coming from Menai Bridge about 3/4 an hour before low water!
Don,t know where the BIG BLANK came from /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Looks spectacular about 2 hours into the flood after a spring ebb.
Rapids, whirly pools, water shelves as it passes over the undulating bottom.
Quite noisy also. My current (no pun intended!) boat is flat out at 16knts punching the full force of the flood on a spring has knocked me back to 7.5 kts in places!
Very photogenic place The Straits try and do some more soon, if I can remember how. Took me ages to post those two! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
