Used to team race Fireflies & crewed occassionally for a chap who used to crew for Uffa Fox himself. Taught me to sail without a rudder amongst other things, very useful for understanding the dynamics of hull & rig but not something I want to have to practice out of necessity!

I used to crew for a bloke who used to crew for Uffa Fox too. Wasn't Laurence Kent was it? (but I expect there were 000's who could make this claim)
many years ago I read his auto biography,a very good and interesting read a very humorous man.One of the stories was of a man who used to bike down a grassy lane to work in the I of W. Uffa told him to stop as he was destroying the grass, the man carried on so he got his twelve bore and shot his front wheel out! He finished up in court.
He was also supposed to be a lunatic driver and fitted a pressure pad to the floor on the passenger side attached to a dial which went from "SAFE" through to "DANGER".
Apparently it was correct most of the time and baffled the passengers enormously.
I sailed Int 14 K201 "Daring" once. She was the second planing 14 designed by Uffa after Avenger... Beautiful old boat and apparently still around in a garage in Penzance.
What a designer though, designing the Jollyboat when he was "getting a bit thick aft" for a Firefly. One of the most amazing performance 18's I ever sailed, and beautiful in varnish finish
After a couple of sails in a Firefly I came to the conclusion that they were designed for the same size people that can fit into the back of a 2+2 sports coupe - an amputee dwarf.
Google british pathe then search for sailing in britishpathe site. Third hit down is a little film showing early production of fireflys. Nice little film for anyone and a great site for lots of other subjects
