Just had a call from Wiggo, apparently a 35' powerboat up in flames in C basin in Hythe /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif The adjacent yacht too, apparently. A tragedy for any boat and boater - I hope no-one was hurt. Wiggo reckons about 7 fire engines on site now...

Apparently a Sunseeker and whilst I have just been told an ambulance was seen to have taken four people away it seems that they were not seriously injured thankfully. According to my pal in C at the momment Calshot lifeboat there, coastguard etc.

Nasty stuff but all under control it seems

Nick

Similar crossed my mind, but bit my tongue until things had settled down for a day or two. Not the time to have a diesel petrol arguement imho, until we know status of those onboard and nearby

I hear hat your saying Brendan, but things move so quickly on this forum you have to get in quick.

I hope that nobody has been injured or badly hurt. At the end of they day, metal and GRP is easily replaced, a life can never be replaced...

Crap, we were there this afternoon returned after after a nite away at Port Solent. Could it be the older SS ( mid/late eighties) by the pub? We gave them a wave the other evening walking past.

Their neigbour Sealine 25 was our old berthing neighbour.

Brendan, most fires appear to be started as a result of electrical faults. Fuel is rarely to blame, although once a fire has taken hold I would much rather be close to a diesel boat than a petrol one!

Of course it's all a bit early to be speculating about the cause.

No need for rudeness - I used the term "apparently" as I gained the info from someone there now.

I am sure the verified facts will come out soon and the most important concern must be for people's welfare.

Having read the post again I think you are right Pete so sorry Makkers for reaction!

My pal said not the Sunseeker near the pub but he thinks a newer one.

Thanks

Nick

Perhaps 'terrible' was more appropriate, my comment was by no means intended to be confrontational or in dispute, the news is sad and shocking and that this happened only hours after being there. No need for apologies Nick.

We have direct view of C basin and 'Crystal R****' from our berth in B and know a few of the boats and people so thoughts with them and if effected and of course the reported casualties.

Electricals at berth, and exhausts on the move. Imho. Based on lot of experience. Fires, before anyone starts telling stories of electrical probs at sea

Terrible.
I hope the people involved are not too badly hurt.
Last year our previous boat was burnt as the boat lying next to it (diesel engine, origo cooker, no gas, battery switched turned off) caught fire.
I will never forget the sight when we arrived at the pontoon after the call from the HM in the middle of the night.

If you know C basin, it was the long pontoon from in front of the pub, the boats were about 1/3 to 1/2 way down there on the left side (with your back to the pub). The powerboat had a forward facing radar arch, and so perhaps was a Sunseeker (could also have been a Doral, BMB etc of course - thinking aloud, I don't recall seeing the 'wings' that Sunseeker have/had). If so, it was newish, as it was all curvy. There were a couple of thumps as I got round there, which I assume was flares going off, and apparently this spread the fire to the yacht on the pub side of it.

A few camera pics...
