Boat Safety Certificate time coming round again and extinguishers need recharging or replacing.
Just been quoted around £30 plus VAT for recharge or £40 for new but see offers on web for well under £20 for new dry powder 2Kg.

Anyone have anything useful to say?

Check that the ones on the web have the correct ratings that the BSS requires. I dont have them to hand. There is some British Standard and they have to be Type A or Type B.
Do they need recharging? Is that because the guage is down to the red?

I use ABC fire protection for mine , they do a call out charge of £20 - £30 and charge or replace as many as you have .
He says he charges for a replacement but iv'e never been charged for one and they normally give me an extra one now and then .
Shame mine arn't due for a check or you could have dropped them round here and had it done for free .

Edit; ops forgot the contact number ... 01420 542424

The existing extinguishers were supplied about the time of the last BSS 4 years ago and appear to have no specific final expiry date. There is a 'recommendation' to service every year but not sure that you can actually do anything other than check for damage and make sure gauge is in the green.

BSS office say they simply expect the examiner to ensure that the extinguishers meet the marking and Type requirements.

So......do I need to do owt or nowt?

As long as the guage is in the green and the BSS has not changed the spec (cos they wouldnt do that would they!) - then leave them alone.
