Fire extinguishers Lidl 18 Aug

The last ones I got from Lidl were totally non ferrous and could be mounted near a magnetic compass or even the flux-gate sensor. They were constructed from aluminium and plastic.

Just check the dates on those extinguishers.

The last ones I bought from there were only in date for 18 months or one season.

I have one like those in the forth coming offer in the kitchen.

There is nothing that identifies itself as an "expiry date".

It has a pressure gauge. That is still in the green sector, therefore it is functional ? No?

Interesting question Vic

I don't know UK regs regarding fire extinguishers on boats but in RSA they must be inspected by a registered service agent every 12 months.

This involves opening then up and testing the power moisture content and drying if needed then re pressurizing with nitrogen.

This is quite a pain and if not done SAMSA will not issue a safety certificate and therefore you cannot use your boat outside the port.

Only one thing about dry power is that the power tends to pack down and needs a good shake once in a while.

Mine are on the boat.

I will check them out, but they are pretty similar to the ANAF ones shown and they are indeed stamped, and short dated. I have never seen extinguishers sold without a date stamp, tho I admit they may exist.

PS
For the sake of 12 quid I could't be rrrrrsed to take them back at the time.

I bough two of these in LIDL in Dublin last month. I have one here. It is stamped as manufactured in April 2011. there is no expiry date stamped on it. It just says to check it periodically. whats the normal replacement/expiry period??

whats the normal replacement/expiry period??

I don't think there's anything in them that inherently expires. As long as the gas hasn't escaped (gauge) and there's no obvious damage, they should work. Worth giving the powder a shake up from time to time - the classic solution on a boat is to mount them athwartships (mine are) so that as you tack they get shaken around.

The ones I have had in the past have been 5 years.

Not that it concerns me much but there were some panic stories about keen French customs men so I thought it was prudent to get some dated this century.

The offering changes year on year, my house ones purchased in 2005 have a use by date of Jan 2012, the boat ones don't but have a gauge.

I wish they would do an AFFF extinguisher as the two I have cost an arm and a leg.

Interesting. Though I agree with this approach, my surveyor seems to disagree. When I had my insurance survey done last year, his report said that the extinguishers must be replaced with in-date models i.e. have visible expiry dates on them.
Reluctantly, I did this but felt it was unnecessary, as the arrow on the pressure gauge was well iinto the green sector

Thats not a fire extinguisher... its a "Feuerloscher", whatever the heck that is.... could be some weird German soft cheese dispenser.

Mind that would be a Weichkase Spruhdose.....

Hmmmmm - Google Chrome seems to disagree with you - it thinks that a feuerloscher is a fire extinguisher!
Still what would they know?

Probably:)

I checked the fire extiguisher on mine recently, expiry date 1985! It looks perfect and has a test button on it which you press down and if it returns to its original position its OK. It does, so is it still functional.

Probably.

I've replaced it with two remarkably large 2L foam extinguishers:)

I have two Ikg powder extinguishers in front of me and numerous others (2 in car, 2 on boat) elsewhere. One is by ANAF Group and the other is a Kidde. The first has a manufacture date on it week 29/98, but no expiry date. The Kidde one has no meaningful dates on it at all.

I understand that as long as its gauge is in the green sector the pressure is OK, and the only age risk with powder is clumping, so you are advised to shake them every so often.

I suppose one should make enquiries about expiry dates.

As a by the bye In the 60s I used to ride a wartime Matchless 350 despatch riders bike (not on roads I was too young). It had a small Pyrene pump action extinguisher clipped under the tank. It worked fine nearly 30 years later when the carb spat back and set the thing on fire at Harringworth Airfield near Corby (RAF Spanhoe during the war). Close thing though.:D

From The FAQs on Kidde's owm website

Q) Where can I find the expiry date on the fire extinguisher?
Kidde fire extinguishers do not have an expiry date. The warranty period starts from the date of receipt of purchase.

My ANAF one has what might be a date, C1 2009, on it but I have no idea if that's the manufacture date, sell by date, use by date or what
