Think this is my first post on MBC so go easy on me

I want to fit auto fire extinguisher in engine compartment (around 1.5 cu m) but not dry powder. I seem to recall that there is now a halon substitute - I saw something at SBS but couldn't be bothered to Q.

Any info/links/prices?
 
Try searching old postings - I recall a thread on this subject in the not too distant past.
 
There is one, but I can't remember the name. I do know it's damned expensive compared to powder. Why the downer on powder, BTW?
 
Has anyone ever had a powder extinguisher go off in a motor
compartment? What's the resulting mess (assuming the fire's
been put out). I keep a CO2 one beside the box.
 
Not done it on boats but have done in car engine compartments. The powder is an absolute swine to get off of anything that was hot when it went off. If it gets in running engines its damned abrasive as well.

I've been loooking at getting involved with Pyrogen, which is an inert substance that goes off like an aerosol when triggered either electronically or mechanically, PM me with you address and I'll send yo a brochure. This has a huge amount of approvals including Lloyds.

Agreed, and it will wreck a motor if it gets ingested, too. BUT... powder's cheap, the insurance company's happy to rebuild the engines if necessary, and I don't have to clean up the mess.

I keep more extinguishers than the bloody Fire Brigade, but you wouldn't catch me opening the lid if I thought there was a fire down there. I have to get past that bit to get to the tender, and that's my escape route, thank you very much!
 
Pyrogen were one of my reasons in going to the SBS. The smallest auto unit they do costs around 120.00 which is probably overkill for me although I would consider it for a sea-going boat. They definitely seem to know their stuff.

Is Pyrogen the same as FM200?

I've just fitted a fuel cutoff. Can you believe that a quality boat didn't come with this as standard? Behind engine bay is a 50 gal diesel tank so I'm keen on stopping the flow if there's an engine bay fire. So, I can now cut off the fuel supply and next I want to stop the fire.

If you've done fire fighting courses (never turn down a chance - it's brilliant and real blue watch stuff) you learn of the triangle which causes fires. Break the triangle and you can tackle the fire. I can starve the fire of fuel, and am now looking to put it out. Powder will do, but is terminal to the engine. If I really need powder I have about 6kg oboard.

You powder lot are all thinking short term - get the fire put out, tow up to Wareham shit I meant Poole, and pick up a new set of engines. I'm thinking how can I put out the fire, sort out the boat and stiff drink for the crew, then onwards across the ocean using my engine again when I need to motor or charge. Gas is the only answer, and I can never personally generate the inert variety.

No FM200 iand Pyrogen are not the same.
From the brochure:-
"Pyrogen is an inert non-toxic solid that remains stable until electrically or thermally activated , where upon it produces a gas-like extinguishing aerosol.
The aerosol attacks the fire fire chemically and physically, giving virtual instant extinguishment and preventing re-ignition"
Uses 1/3rd the volume of Halon to give the same effect, therefore lighter.
