Hi, I'm undecided on the finish for a bare iroko cabin sole. Currenlty thinking on either an oil finish or satin polyurethane varnish. Would varnish need frequent maintenance? Does oil give a dull finish? What would you do?
What ever you do will need maintenance. I have a lot of iroko and it takes a good varnish well. I do oil my hatch sliders and it needs doing a lot more frequent than the varnish. I would varnish.
Used Extra Hard Floor Varnish (solvent based, not water) from the DIY store, on last boat. Was still like new after 5 years.
On the current boat, I put 3 coats onto the factory-applied finish on both the cabin sole & saloon table-top, to protect it. Also still as new after 4 years.
