An esoteric one for you Finesse owners out there! Photographs of other Finesses that I have show the winch for the centreboard to be an open barrel type with what appears to be two handles. The winch on my boat has been replaced by an extremely ugly and intrusive winch from a trailer which looks truly awful. Anyone out there able to give me deatails of the original fitment and where I might obtain a replacement?

Many Thanks

Mike

Yes, winch is credited to an Essex engineering co, if I recall. Two handles -- but the fixed, small one on the front is a brake, which you have to loosen/tighten as you wind/release with the bigger, detachable, handle.
If and when I am ever allowed near the boat again I will take a note/pic.
Cheers
Chris

I used to have a trailable yacht similar to a Maple Leaf, which itself is not unlike a Finesse. When I built it, I made a winch which was completelt contained inside the centreplate case. It was adapted from a trailer winch, and was cunningly arranged so that it could not run away when lowering the centreplate. There was only one handle. I have written a short article with an exploded diagram of the winch on how to build it. I can email it to you if you wish.
Peter.
