Hi, I am considering changing the old parson engines in my boat, It has been suggested that I should consider Cummins 6bt’s as I understand that they fit well in a huntsman 28. I am not an engineer, though I have worked on engines and therefore hoping to keep costs down by doing as much work as I can.
Is there anybody that might be able to offer any advice or suggestions?

Yes, I think so.

Had the chap on the phone a while ago, the other Paul F provided contact details for the man that knows about Parsons boxes.

Sorry have I missed somthing re use of old Parsons boxes is NOT the way to go! Borg Warner 72C with some Perkins adaptor plates...Any surplus Ben?

Hi, yes it is Mike and Joval. She have both ford Parson engines and Parson Hg4 Boxes which I am hoping to change to Borg Warner 72c, I have been having a few problems with one of the boxes. I am hoping to look at changing both the engines and boxes at the same time. To date I have been mainly working on the hull/transom as there was a lot of weeping between the hull and transom. Most of this was due to a previously poor repair, though a sheet of 3mm Agba and a lot of time, we seem to have solved that one. we have managed to get her back in the water before the end of August and have had quiet a lot of fun. I have noticed that there is water seepage coming from around the old lifting strops under the floor in the cabin. Is this a common problem?

Hi Mike - we spoke on the phone, I put you onto the Parson's contact via Paul F.

Fairly commom to have leaks up front, its not a hard job but its a biggy, its symptomatic of the keel needing to come off. Have a look through FOC forum at my keel job and Bill Egan's thread on the subject. Best do it while the engines are out.

If you're hands on they are easy boats to fix.

Pair of ex vehicle Cummins can be under £4k each marinised nicely, get some old Perkins T6.354 adapter plates and BW72's. She'll fly, but do sort the leaks first.

You have my number and email, call anytime.

Thanks Ben, I think that I should have most of the small leaks sorted out by next Summer (I hope). Luckily I have a Joinery shop so working with wood is something that I am passable at!I had to remove part of the Keel to repair the hull/transom. The weeping around the lifting strops is extremely small now the boat has been in the water for the last month. originally when we first got Joval last year the bulge pumps were going off every 10 mins or so, but since the hull repair I have not seen any of the pumps go off once I would say that there is about 4 or 5 cup full of water up front, and none in the back.
I look forward to the day when we get Joval her new engines fitted!

I know one of the previous owners of Joval, Bernard Hines. I am guessing, but I would think he owned the boat around the late 80's/ early 90's.
She was kept on the Thames around Reading, but cruised the Estuary on numerous occasions.
Well loved but not overly cared for!!

Hi Mike, that would make sense as there is a bronze plaque in the cabin dated 1975 for the Thames club.
considering her age she is a fine old girl, we hope to give her a bit of an overhaul over the next few years. we have her at Watchet harbour at the moment and on the day we put her in the water a chap came over and told me that he could not believe it, as he used to see Joval regularly on the Thames when he was a boy in the 70's. I am hoping to find out her history as we have very little.

Bernard also belonged to Rochester Cruiser Club on the Medway, where the boat was moored for a while. Seem to remember that Joval was rammed up the stern whilst there and a new transom was made, excluding the original transom doors. She did not sink, just badly damaged.

Hi Mike, I was wondering if Joval had, had the transom doors.... that would explain why they are not there. from my exploration of the hull and transom, the both appear to be in pretty good condition, so it would appear that the repairs were very well done! I will try and post some pictures over the next few days.
