I was told that my mariner 40 was a 1990 model. So after buying a manuel for 1990 I find to my horror (after paying £28) that a 1990 model has 4 cylinders not 2,which mine has. So is there a fool proof way of identifiying the age of an outboard?

Phone EP Barrus with the serial number and model number. They are very helpful if you ask.

A dealer or service agent should be able to identify it from the model and serial numbers. You should have quoted them when ordering the manual!

You could try the iboats forum at
